Job description

The Automation Engineer is responsible for analyzing, planning, and implementing automated solutions to enhance processes in the production of pressure sensitive labels, flexible packaging, and folded cartons. Must work with a team of engineers to identify areas of improvement and specify the necessary equipment to maximize production and optimize workflow. Oversees and manages automation projects from conception to completion, ensuring seamless delivery and execution.
Principle Duties & Responsibilities
  • Analyze production processes to pinpoint areas of inefficiency and determine their root causes.
  • Assess current equipment and recommend necessary changes or additions to increase throughput and improve production capacity.
  • Evaluate existing manufacturing processes and workflows to identify opportunities for automation that could drive significant benefits.
  • Optimize equipment layouts, workflows, changeover methods, and workforce utilization to enhance overall efficiency.
  • Investigate and communicate with equipment manufacturers to explore promising automated solutions that align with our needs.
  • Plan, implement, and oversee the installation of justified automation projects to ensure successful execution and integration.
  • Work closely with production and maintenance teams to ensure the efficient integration of new equipment, minimizing production downtime.
  • Ensure all production processes adhere to safety standards and are optimized for efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Responsible to follow all safety procedures as required by the role, and to nurture a food safety culture by adhering to all Safe Quality Foods requirements.
  • May perform other duties as assigned by manager.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Must be proficient in computer aided design including 3D modeling software.
  • Must have experience with automation and robotics.
  • Must be results oriented with ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Proficiency in automation systems with a focus on performance management rather than direct PLC programming.
  • Must have excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Must be proficient with Windows and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must have strong organizational, analytical and communication skills.
  • Must be able to communicate and field questions in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Requires nearly constant concentration and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to effectively utilize the English language.
  • Requires education as is generally acquired in four (4) years of college with a Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering or technology field, applicable majors include Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Electrical or Chemical Engineering.
  • Requires some international and domestic travel.
  • Ability to talk and hear 90% of work time.
  • Standing and walking required 25% of work time.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds for 20% of work time.
  • Ability to: see clearly at 20 inches or 20 feet or more; ability to identify and distinguish colors; ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while the eyes are fixed on a given point; and the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
