Weekend Only Nurse information

What is a weekend only nurse?

Weekend Only Nurses are registered nurses or licensed practical nurses who work exclusively on weekends, typically covering shifts on Saturdays and Sundays. These roles are designed to provide continuous patient care during times when regular weekday staff may be off. Weekend Only Nurses may work longer shifts over fewer days and often receive higher pay rates or incentives. Their responsibilities mirror those of other nurses, including patient assessments, administering medications, and collaborating with healthcare teams. This role is ideal for individuals seeking a flexible work schedule or needing time off during the week.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend only nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Only Nurse, you need a current RN or LPN license, solid clinical assessment skills, and experience in acute or long-term care settings. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), medication administration systems, and basic life support (BLS) certification are typically required. Excellent time management, resilience, and strong communication skills help you adapt to high patient volumes and varying weekend staffing levels. These skills and qualities are essential to ensure consistent, high-quality patient care during critical weekend shifts.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend only nurses, and how can they be managed?

Weekend Only Nurses often encounter challenges such as heavier patient loads, limited access to support staff, and the need to quickly adapt to patients and situations that may have changed since their last shift. Effective communication with weekday staff, strong organizational skills, and proactive time management are key to overcoming these challenges. Building rapport with the weekend team and staying updated on patient care plans can also help ensure seamless care and job satisfaction.

Blackbird Health is clinician-founded, owned, and operated by dedicated professionals. We believe that providing the best care for children starts with building the best possible team. We deliver virtual and in-person mental health services across Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New Jersey—and we're growing into new markets in 2026.

At Blackbird, we take a whole-child approach, looking at how the brain, body, and behavior interact to address the root causes of challenges, not just the symptoms. If you're passionate about helping children and families while growing your career, Blackbird is the place to make an impact.

Join us and help change mental health care for children for the better!

Employment Options
  • Role: W-2 Employee - Part-Time
  • Commitment: 20 hours per week (17 clinical hours + 3 non-clinical hours).

  • Full Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) with employer match.
  • Paid Time Off: Generous PTO plus 11 company holidays.
What Makes You, You
  • Mission-Driven: Passionate about transforming behavioral health for youth.
  • Clinically Excellent: Experience working with children/adolescents as a PMHNP; practiced independently at the top of your scope for at least one year.
  • Relationship-Focused: Excel at building trust with families and providing deep patient education.
  • Collaborative: Thrive in team-based environments alongside therapists and interdisciplinary colleagues.
  • Tech-Savvy: Proficient in Google Suite, EMR systems, and virtual platforms for telehealth.

  • Whole-Child Integration: Work with therapists to create treatment plans that address the root cause of behavior.
  • Family Empowerment: Educate parents and caregivers, helping them navigate their child's mental health journey.
  • Clinical Excellence: Oversee diagnostic testing and maintain HIPAA-compliant records.
