Mental Health Intake Evaluation Specialist

 

Position Summary

The Mental Health Intake Evaluation Specialist plays a vital role in assessing individuals seeking peer support services. This position is responsible for conducting person-centered intake evaluations to determine eligibility and appropriateness for peer services. The ideal candidate will be a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) and Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) who uses their lived experience, combined with professional training, to guide individuals toward recovery-focused services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct structured intake assessments with individuals to determine their eligibility for peer support services.

  • Gather relevant background information, including mental health history, recovery goals, support needs, and current challenges.

  • Assess whether peer support is appropriate and aligned with the individual’s readiness and recovery journey.

  • Clearly explain the scope of peer services, participant rights, confidentiality policies, and program expectations.

  • Accurately document all intake interviews, assessments, and service recommendations in compliance with organizational and state guidelines.

  • Collaborate with peer support staff, supervisors, and other care providers to ensure smooth transitions into services.

  • Maintain a compassionate, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented approach in all client interactions.

  • Participate in regular staff meetings, supervision, and professional development training.

Required Current certification as a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) and Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS)

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, human services, or a related field preferred.

  • Demonstrated lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery, with a willingness to share experiences in a professional and intentional manner.

  • Prior experience conducting intakes, screenings, or assessments in a behavioral health or peer support setting is strongly preferred.

  • Strong understanding of peer support values, recovery principles, and trauma-informed care.

  • Excellent communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficient in electronic documentation and familiar with EHR or other data systems.

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and professional boundaries.

  • Culturally competent and able to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
