Job description

General Dentist – Orlando VA Healthcare System (Contract)

Location: Orlando VA Medical Center (Lake Nona), 13800 Veterans Way, Orlando, FL 32827; travel to OVAHCS outpatient clinics (Lake Baldwin, Viera, Daytona Beach) as needed

Schedule: Full-time, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (40 hours/week maximum; no overtime). Occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays may be required with advance notice.

Position Type: Contract position supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs, Orlando VA Healthcare System (OVAHCS)

Position Summary

The General Dentist provides quality onsite dental care to eligible Veterans of the Orlando VA Healthcare System in collaboration with other health care professionals. Care includes consultation, comprehensive dental examination, diagnosis, and preventive and therapeutic treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area, and adjacent and associated structures, in accordance with VA Dentist qualification standards.


Duties and Responsibilities

Within the approved scope of practice, duties include but are not limited to:

  • Comprehensive dental examinations, diagnosis, and treatment planning
  • Treatment of caries, defective restorations, traumatic injuries to teeth, and occlusal therapy
  • Prosthetic replacement of missing dentition (fixed and removable)
  • Prosthetic restoration of single implants and implant-retained dentures
  • Non-surgical endodontic therapy
  • Gingivectomy/gingivoplasty
  • Simple and surgical extractions, socket preservation, and alveoloplasty
  • Minor pre-prosthetic surgery (soft and hard tissue)
  • Localized delivery of chemotherapeutic agents
  • Repair of minor intra-oral lacerations and traumatic wounds
  • Soft tissue intra-oral biopsy (less than 1 cm)
  • Minimal sedation/anxiolysis (oral only, single agent)
  • Emergency dental treatment
  • Oral pathology/oral medicine and non-surgical management of temporomandibular disorders
  • Complete occlusal adjustment
  • Post-mortem dental examination for identification purposes
  • Accurate, timely documentation in the VA electronic health record (CPRS); safeguarding of patient information per HIPAA and VA privacy requirements

Required Qualifications
  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in any U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia (candidates with any history of a restricted, suspended, revoked, voluntarily surrendered, or denied license cannot be considered)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Current DEA certificate
  • Ability to obtain VA credentialing and privileging through the OVAHCS Professional Standards Board prior to start
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI)
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
Health and Compliance Requirements
  • Negative TB test (TST or IGRA) current within the past year; chest x-ray if positive
  • Proof of immunity: MMR and Varicella; proof of Tdap vaccination
  • Annual influenza vaccination (or mask requirement during flu season if contraindicated)
  • Hepatitis B vaccination series and bloodborne pathogen training
  • Completion of VA-required training (VA privacy/information security, HIPAA, CPRS orientation)
