Lifeguard

General Responsibilities:

  • Implements all water safety policies and procedures; supervises members and guests in and around the swimming pool.

Essential Functions/Accountabilities:

  • Because of the fluctuating demands of the club's operation, it may be necessary that each employee performs a multitude of different functions; therefore, as an essential part of your job, you will be expected to help others when the occasion arises, just as other employees are expected to help you. Accordingly, you may be expected to perform other tasks as needed or as directed.
  • Adhere to all the various written mandatory standards of operations, policies, and procedures, manuals, memos, oral instructions, etc., all of which go to make up the essential function of the job.
  • Remedy all unsafe conditions that could endanger anyone.
  • Maintain the club's assets.
  • Advises the director of member experience of member suggestions or complaints.
  • Vacuums pool empties automatic skimmer, skims bugs, and other debris from the surface to prepare the pool for daily use.
  • Always supervises and observes swimmers to ensure their safety. Recommends removal of unruly swimmers, enforcing conduct rules.
  • Administers to minor injuries such as small cuts and bruises of swimmers.
  • Maintains the amenities and cleanliness of changing rooms, bathrooms, and showers.
  • Assists in organizing clinic and private swimming lessons for members as directed.
  • Checks first aid supplies and reports needed items.
  • Organizes and monitors pool games; suggests poolside games.
  • Place the rescue tube and ring buoy on the lifeguard chair in the morning and at the end of the day. Returns these and all swimming aids and pool toys to the lifeguard locker.
  • Straightens the pool and surrounding areas during the day: furniture, trash, etc.
  • Maintains all necessary records.
  • Attends all meetings as directed.
  • Reports any violation of rules, or any significant events, to the clubhouse, pool, and general manager daily. Closes pool in an emergency situation (contamination, chemical imbalance, weather).
  • Observes daily sanitation requirements of pools by checking water conditions for chlorine and PH (acidity) contents. Maintains daily logbook of water test conditions for inspection of local health agency.
  • Although the splash pad is the responsibility of parents, lifeguards will monitor this area for 1.) cleanliness, and 2. safety issues) to ensure that no problems arise.

Education/Experience:

  • Work experience & tenure: 1 year as a lifeguard.
  • Education: Some colleges preferred.
  • Certification/License: Must have passed official Red Cross First Aid and Lifesaving Courses and may be expected to have passed certain local first aid and swimming requirements as requested by the pool manager/department head.
  • Security/Confidentiality: Do not discuss club business with anyone.
  • Working conditions/environment: Primarily outdoor.
  • Performance standards:
    • Must be an excellent swimmer with an ample amount of physical strength.
    • Must display potential leadership abilities and get along with children and parents.
    • Must display strong leadership potential, be mature and stable of personality, and be ready and willing to undertake unusual and extraordinary situations.
    • Must possess most of the following traits: Integrity; honest & open, aggressive, energetic; is presentable, "looks the part"; appropriately dressed; hygienic; good physical condition; good stamina; genuinely smiles a lot; resourceful; profile interview is positive; educated and/or continuing to improve him or herself.

In addition to usual scheduled hours, employees may be requested/required to work other hours/days. Normally scheduled hours are dependent on demand, including weekends and holidays.
