Job description

Part-Time Library Technical Assistant

The Macdonald-Kelce Library at The University of Tampa is seeking a Part-Time Library Technical Assistant to provide essential circulation and public service support during evening and weekend hours.

The Library Technical Assistant provides customer service at the Circulation Desk, assists library patrons and guests, supervises student employees, supports library operations, and performs opening and closing procedures. During designated shifts, this position may assume responsibility for library operations when a supervisor is not on duty.

Additional hours may be available based on departmental needs; however, the position will not exceed 29 hours per week.

This position reports to the Circulation Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide circulation services, including checking library materials in and out, assisting with patron accounts, and updating patron records.
  • Provide courteous and responsive customer service to students, faculty, staff, guests, and other library users.
  • Supervise, train, and provide work direction to student assistants during assigned shifts.
  • Assist patrons with the use of library databases, catalogs, computer applications, and other research and information resources.
  • Instruct and assist patrons with library equipment and technology, including computers, printers, scanners, microfilm readers, and related equipment.
  • Shelve library materials and maintain the organization and accuracy of collections according to the library's classification and shelving system.
  • Participate in collection inventory, shelf-reading, shelving, and other projects designed to maintain the collection and enhance service to library users.
  • Answer directional and general library questions and refer patrons to appropriate library personnel or departments when additional assistance is needed.
  • Perform assigned library opening and closing procedures.
  • Assume responsibility for library operations during designated periods when a supervisor is not on duty, following established library policies and procedures and responding appropriately to patron, facility, or operational concerns.
  • Perform other duties and assist with special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work the evening and weekend schedule designated by the department.
  • Familiarity with basic computer operations and commonly used computer applications.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and function effectively in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to learn and use University and library software systems, including Workday and Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one year of experience working in a library or comparable customer-service environment.
  • Previous supervisory, team-lead, or student-worker oversight experience.
  • Experience working in an academic or higher education environment.
  • Experience assisting customers or patrons with computers, printers, scanners, or other technology.
Work Schedule

Academic Year

  • Friday: 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Summer

  • Sunday: 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Schedule and additional hours may vary based on departmental and library operational needs.
