JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/Objective
Magellan International School (MIS) in Austin, Texas, is seeking a Bilingual Teaching Assistant (TA) to work in our Preschool with 3- and 4- year old students. The TA is responsible for providing support with educational lessons and activities to teachers in a classroom setting.
Essential Functions
  • Provides support to teachers in preparing classroom activities amp; maintaining a clean classroom
  • Assists in the implementation of class lessons, activities, and special events as instructed by the teacher or the Early Years PYP Coordinator
  • Creates a Spanish immersion environment in the classroom
  • Helps maintain the flow of classroom activities by organizing and preparing supplies and materials for student use, and adhering to planned schedules
  • Develops and maintains an awareness of student needs, class rules, class procedures, and instructional materials in order to anticipate and respond in the classroom environment
  • Supervises the class or group independently on brief occasions when the teacher is out of the room, and carries out class activities as directed by the teacher in his/her absence
  • Assists with the execution of behavior management plans to improve student behavior as directed by the teachers and the school counselors
  • Provides personal assistance to students, as required by their age and developmental level, including: helping with meal times, toileting, dressing/undressing, and/or other personal needs
  • Serves as a role model for students by dressing professionally, demonstrating the importance of learning, accepting responsibility, and showing pride in the education profession
  • Participates actively in training opportunities to ensure continual professional growth
  • Participates in fundraising and marketing efforts to support the school’s growth
  • Promotes the school’s mission and builds relationships with community partners
  • Supervises students in activities outside of the classroom, including carline, music room, library, and playground areas
  • Ensures the safety and productivity of time spent in these areas by:
    • Observing students carefully at all times
    • Exercising good judgment and patience in supervising children
    • Maintaining an understanding of safety procedures
    • Taking initiative to intervene when necessary
    • Managing and caring for materials used in these activities
    • Assists with the formulation and execution of plans to meet student needs
    • Assists with special events and meetings
Other Duties
Performs other duties as assigned, which may change at any time with or without notice.
Required Education and Experience
  • A minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood, Education, or a related field, and/or experience as a teaching assistant at a preschool or elementary school
  • Strong desire and ability to work with small children
  • Communicate effectively in English and Spanish, both orally and in writing
  • Basic computer skills (i.e., use the internet, read/reply to emails, use Google Drive, etc.)
  • Complete CPR and other safety training and maintain related certifications

Work Environment

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
“Core” work hours:
  • 7:45 am - 5:30 pm on Mondays
  • 7:45 am - 3:45 pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays
  • 7:45 am - 4:30 pm on Wednesdays
  • Availability during occasional nights and weekend events.
Travel
Some out-of-area travel may be expected but is not common.
