Job Description

The Library Assistant provides administrative support to the associates of the Traurig Library at Post University. This position requires approval from financial aid for Federal Work Study.

Location: Post University Main Campus - Library

Supervisor: Tracy Ralston, Library Director

Rate of Pay: Minimum Wage

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Library Assistant is to assist with the daily operations of the Post University Library which includes, but is not limited to:

  • Covering night shifts when needed
  • Mail check-in and shelving when needed
  • Circulation¾check in/out/renew books and visual materials for patrons¾check for overdue books
  • Shelve returned books/magazines (upper and lower level)
  • OPAC¾assign library cards, assist patrons how to use the online catalog
  • Customer service¾answer phones
  • Check in/shelve government documents
  • Show patrons how to use online databases
  • Interlibrary loan assistance
  • Assist with items that faculty/staff put on reserve
  • Discard old newspapers
  • Copiers¾make changes for patrons, troubleshooting
  • Printer troubleshooting
  • Videos and DVDs¾help patrons with video/DVD location in the upper library
  • Shelf-read books/videos/DVDs/CDs to make sure they are in shelf order
  • Law Collection¾direct patrons to law collection, help find law documents
  • Ready reference and directional questions assistance
  • Special projects when needed by Library staff, ex.: inventory of the collection

This position requires approximately 10 - 20 hours per week.

Minimum Skills, Training, and Attributes

  • Must be a current student at Post University
  • MS Office experience a plus.
  • Clerical experience (Filing, Alphabetizing)
  • Candidate will pay attention to detail
  • Job experience preferable, especially working with the public and answering phones

Special projects vary, but all duties are detail-oriented, and teach the student organizational and time management skills. Duties are varied and extensive, covering all departments of the library including reference assistance to other students, offering cataloging and processing assistance to the library staff, and covering night shifts.
