Job description

This position is located in the READS Collaborative Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program in Norton, MA. Qualifications:

- REQUIRED! Completion of the Educational Interpreter Proficiency Assessment (EIPA); both performance and written as required by DESE/MCDHH.
- REQUIRED! Achieved the performance score on the EIPA, for both performance & written, as determined by DESE/MCDHH.
- REQUIRED! Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Licensure in Massachusetts
- Prior experience working with students, ranging from elementary to high school levels preferred
- Basic understanding of child development as well as language development, or willingness to learn
- Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary educational team on matters regarding interpreting and communication
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Any additions/changes to the above, qualifications as deemed appropriate by READS Board of Directors







Additional:

- Provide educational interpreting services within all assigned grade levels, classes & meetings as determined by the READS DHH administrator.
- Interpret or transliterate in a mode that reflects the student's language use as outlined in the student's IEP
- Ability to both produce accessible language and understand child and adolescent signers
- An understanding of the stages of child development particularly as these relate to language development and knowledge specific to language development of deaf and hard of hearing children
- Knowledge of grade specific academic content
- Work with the classroom teacher to adapt classroom/school activities to promote participation of deaf or hard of hearing individuals
- Model social strategies to encourage interaction between individuals who use sign language and those who do not
Ensure incidental information is interpreted
- Maintain confidentiality information is only shared within the educational team
- Maintain professional boundaries, respect privacy of students and foster independent student learning
- Conduct oneself appropriate to the academic setting
-Prepare for classroom academic content, including previewing text books, teacher's lesson plans or electronic presentation of material
- Provide academic support as outlined in the IEP under the guidance of a certified teacher
- Provide sign language support to classmates of the student who is deaf or hard of hearing
- Attend and participate in any meetings which you are requested to attend.
- Attend Parent Conferences and Parents' Night activities as requested.
- Contribute as a member of a team
- Any additional responsibilities as determined by the Program Administrator.

Work Year: 183 days

Rate of Pay:  $51,503 to  $67,771, based on Experience as per READS ESP Unit Collective Bargaining Agreement
