About the Job
This role is PRN, hours may vary based on departmental need and availability.
General Summary of Position
Performs a variety of laboratory testing from waived to high complexity per Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA). Will work in one or more laboratory sections. Evaluates and reports results for use in patient diagnosis and treatment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Performs a wide variety of routine and special procedures following prescribed protocol and using manual or automated methods; calculates and reports results as established; consults with pathologist regarding difficult analysis or abnormal findings.
  • Processes specimens ensuring accuracy of identification; confidentiality of information and appropriate preparation storage and transportation; may perform specimen procurement as required.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment in areas of assignment; troubleshoots problems; and validates and documents information as required per standard protocol.
  • Participates in surveys conducts established quality control of procedures evaluates results implements corrective action when indicated and ensures accuracy of test results.
  • Prepares evaluates and labels reagents media etc. per procedure.
  • Maintains inventory supply; stocks and maintains neat orderly work area.
  • Trains new associates and students. Instructs others in new procedures; evaluates and documents performance.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams; participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Can manage the department in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimal Qualifications
Education
  • Associate's degree in accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program required or
  • 60 semester hours including 24 hours of medical lab technology required or
  • 60 semester hours including 24 hours of science that includes 6 hours of chemistry 6 hours of biology and 12 hours of chemistry biology required or
  • medical lab technician in any combination and laboratory training that includes either completion of a clinical lab training program required or
  • 3 months training in each specialty in which high complexity testing preferred

Experience
  • Less than 1 year New graduates from clinical lab training programs are acceptable. preferred

Licenses and Certifications
  • Health Educ & Welfare (lab) - HEW ASCP/AMT/HEW certification preferred
  • American Medical Technologists - AMT preferred
  • MLT-Medical Lab Technician (ASCP) preferred

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
  • Ability to read write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.
  • Ability to demonstrate ethical behavior that supports the hospital's mission values and commitment to compliance with all federal state and regulatory laws. Inspires trust and exhibits honesty and integrity within the scope of daily activities.
  • Exhibits professionalism courtesy and excellent customer service while interacting with patients guests and co-workers.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Knowledge skill and ability to utilize the following equipment for: Hematology Chemistry Urinalysis Blood Bank Microbiology Histology Automated Stainers; Centrifuges fax copier phone computer and scanner.
  • Knowledge skill and ability to complete all laboratory competencies within the Medical Laboratory Technician scope of practice.
