Job description

POSITION DETAILS

Full-time with benefits; Primarily 11am to 10pm; 4 days per week, Monday - Friday, 10 hour shifts.  Will be in a rotation to work day shift or night shift if needed by the department (vacations, medical leaves, etc).  Weekend rotation as back up to weekender - approx 1-2 per year.  Holiday rotation, 2 per year.  Certification prefered but not required; we'll help right candidate get certified.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Director, performs a variety of tasks imperative to the daily success of the department and organization which include but are not limited to: collecting specimens, scheduling procedures, performing minimal testing procedures, clerical duties, inventory, and review of billing.    

MAJOR JOB FUNCTION

  1. Performs phlebotomy procedures, including venipunctures, heel sticks and finger sticks on all types and ages of patients and completes related documentation.

  2. Responsible for general clerical needs of the department including typing reports, memos, & procedures, handling phone calls and customer inquiries, etc.

  3. Performs specimen collection procedures, including obtaining urine samples and drug screen collection for both DOT and Non-DOT clients and processes all related paperwork.

  4. Executes all aspects inventories including monitoring, ordering, stocking and scheduling as needed for Drug collections, Reference labs, phlebotomy and general lab.

  5. Inventories Neonatal Screening forms and notifies Manager for ordering.

  6. Processes paperwork and reports for send-out testing from beginning to end including processing samples; completing requisitions and logs; preparing for and sending out with courier; and distributing returned results.

  7. Readies samples daily for reference lab courier.

  8. Processes orders as needed including verifying accuracy (provider signature, diagnosis code, etc.), researches missing data and corrects if necessary.  Resolves issues with orders.

  9. Orders tests in Epic for lab outpatients, reference lab clients, etc.

  10. Verifies billing from outside labs for reference lab work.

  11. Performs waived testing procedures as assigned under the supervision of Med Techs.

  12. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Phlebotomy or lab experience preferred.

  2. Certification as a Phlebotomist by a national accrediting agency preferred.

  3. High School graduate or equivalent required.

  4. Current certification or eligibility to become BLS certified.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Experience in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook preferred.

  2. Excellent human relation skills as demonstrated by the ability to interface positively with all customers and employees.

  3. Must acquire the knowledge and maintain established competency levels to perform essential laboratory practice.

  4. Must have the ability to work with frequent interruptions, under stress, with minimal supervision, and to exercise initiative and judgment in analyzing, organizing, planning, prioritizing, scheduling and coordinating work with others.

  5. Needs to possess as high level of intelligence, integrity, sense of responsibility and ability to comprehend and analyze details.

  6. Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.

  7. Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for infant through geriatric patients.

  8. Prior laboratory experience preferred.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  1. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and talk and hear.

  2. Lab Assistant is frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms.  The Lab Assistant is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch.

  3. Lab Assistant must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  4. Lab Assistant must be able to distinguish colors accurately and successfully pass a color blindness test.
