POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Sewing Machine Operator is responsible for performing precise alterations, repairs, and finishing work on U.S. Marine Corps uniforms and related garments using industrial sewing equipment. This role supports mission readiness by ensuring that all uniforms meet Marine Corps dress standards and specifications. The operator must demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and efficiency in working with various fabrics, seams, and fastenings. Working in a fast-paced military environment, the Sewing Machine Operator contributes directly to the professional appearance and uniform compliance of service members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate industrial sewing machines (straight stitch, overlock, blind hem, bar tack, etc.) to perform alterations and repairs on military uniforms, including trousers, jackets, shirts, and dress blues.
  • Perform hemming, tapering, seaming, patching, and zipper replacement according to USMC standards.
  • Attach or reapply insignias, name tapes, rank patches, and other uniform components accurately and to regulation.
  • Read and interpret work orders and alteration instructions to determine sewing tasks and specifications
  • Inspect garments before and after sewing to ensure quality, accuracy, and proper fit.
  • Maintain sewing equipment, replace needles, thread machines, and report malfunctions as needed.
  • Collaborate with fitters, rippers, and customer service staff to ensure garments are properly prepped and delivered on schedule.
  • Handle each uniform with care and discretion, maintaining accountability and confidentiality.
  • Meet daily production goals and support the team in prioritizing urgent or ceremonial uniform requests.
  • Follow all safety protocols, equipment procedures, and Marine Corps uniform regulations.
  • Comply with all safety, security, and base access regulations while operating in a U.S. military environment.
  • Report equipment issues, operational delays, or material shortages to supervisory staff in a timely manner.
  • Provide professional, courteous, and timely customer service to U.S. Marine Corps personnel, ensuring all inquiries, concerns, and special garment requests are handled with accuracy, discretion, and a commitment to excellence.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of sewing experience, preferably in a professional or military setting.
  • Proficiency in operating various types of sewing machines and performing hand sewing when needed.
  • Knowledge of military garment construction and alterations strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work with a variety of fabrics and garments with attention to precision and detail.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Must be able to meet security requirements and work on a U.S. military installation.
  • Willingness to learn, cross-train and become knowledgeable in other functional areas.

WORKING ENVIORNMENT
