Job description

Job Title: Deli Associate                                

Reports to:  Deli Manager                            

Job Summary:

As a Deli Associate, you will be responsible for providing exceptional customer service and ensuring the efficient operation of the deli department. Your main tasks will involve preparing and serving a variety of deli items, maintaining a clean and organized workspace, and assisting customers with their deli needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Food Preparation: Prepare and assemble various deli items, such as sandwiches, hot meals, and deli meats. Follow recipes, portion control guidelines, and food safety regulations to ensure consistent quality.
  2. Customer Service: Interact with customers in a friendly and courteous manner, taking orders, answering questions, and providing recommendations. Assist customers in selecting deli items, slicing meats and cheeses, and packaging products according to their preferences.
  3. Display and Presentation: Maintain an attractive, well-stocked deli display by appealingly arranging products. Ensure that product labels, signage, and pricing are accurate and current. Rotate and replenish items to maintain freshness.
  4. Cleanliness and Sanitation: Follow proper food handling and safety procedures, including personal hygiene practices, to maintain a clean and safe work environment. Regularly clean and sanitize food preparation surfaces, equipment, utensils, and serving areas.
  5. Inventory Management: Monitor inventory levels of deli products, including meats, cheeses, condiments, and other ingredients. Assist in placing orders or notifying appropriate personnel when items must be restocked. Properly store and rotate products to minimize waste and ensure freshness.
  6. Compliance and Quality Control: Adhere to all health and safety regulations, including proper food storage, handling, and temperature control. Conduct quality checks on products to ensure freshness and quality standards are met.
  7. Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other deli associates, as well as store managers, to ensure smooth operations, excellent customer service, and a positive work environment. Assist in training new team members, if necessary.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of deli products, including meats, cheeses, and various deli items.
  2. Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  3. Basic food handling and safety knowledge.
  4. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  5. Basic math skills for portion control.
  6. Flexibility to work weekdays, weekends, and evenings.
  7. Physical stamina to stand for long periods, lift and carry heavy items, and perform repetitive tasks.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Standing and Walking: Deli Associates typically spend most of their working hours standing and walking in the deli department, assisting customers, preparing food, and maintaining the deli area.
  2. Lifting and Carrying: There may be a need to lift and carry supplies, ingredients, and equipment used in the deli, such as containers of deli meats, cheeses, or other components. This can involve loading and unloading deliveries, restocking inventory, and transporting items within the deli area.
  3. Bending and Reaching: Regularly bending, stooping, and reaching is necessary to access ingredients, utensils, and equipment located at various heights within the deli area.
  4. Manual Dexterity: Deli Associates require good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to handle knives, slicers, and various utensils for food preparation and presentation. They also need to precisely assemble sandwiches, salads, or other deli items.
  5. Repetitive Motion: This role involves repetitive motions such as slicing, chopping, and assembling food items. These actions may be performed repeatedly throughout a shift.
  6. Temperature Variation: Deli areas may have different temperature zones, including refrigerated areas and hot food holding stations. Deli Associates should be comfortable working in varying temperature environments.
  7. Cleaning and Sanitation: Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in the deli area requires regularly wiping down surfaces, equipment, and utensils. This may involve using cleaning agents and following proper sanitation protocols.
