Job description

Museum of Science, Boston

www.mos.org

Innovation and creativity come from the unique perspectives of a diverse staff. We value your perspective.

Who We Are

As science and technology increasingly shape our lives, the Museum of Science strives to equip and inspire everyone to use science for the global good while keeping up with the pace of change. Among the world's largest science centers and New England's most attended cultural institution, we engage nearly five million people a year – at Science Park and in museums around the world, in classrooms, and online.

The Museum's singular location connecting Boston and Cambridge puts us at the junction of some of the world's most influential academic institutions and industries, local and state government, schools, and the public. Trusted by each sector, we are ideally positioned to convene, inspire, and create meaningful experiences for all. Come join us on our mission to inspire a lifelong love of science in everyone and living our vision for a world where science belongs to each of us for the good of all of us.

Why We Need You

In October 2026, the Museum will open the Public Science Common, a state-of-the-art convening and performance space for everything from daily science presentations and immersive theatre and dance productions to high-profile spectacle events.

We are seeking Venue Operations Technicians to support the daily operations of the Public Science Common and other Museum venues, implementing a variety of equipment and technologies to execute high-quality productions for both in-person and online audiences.

This position will work a flexible schedule, typically Tuesday-Saturday, with night and weekend event work as scheduled.

What You'll Accomplish

  • Support events in the Public Science Common and other Museum venues across all stages of the production process, including work calls, load-in, technical rehearsals, performances, and strike.
  • Work collaboratively with Technical Director and Audio, Lighting, and Video Supervisors to install, maintain, and run technical production equipment.
  • Serve as technical support staff to a wide range of stakeholders, including Museum educators, outside presenters and production teams, rental event producers, and Museum guests.

What We're Looking For (Competencies)

  • Experienced in running live events and/or theatrical productions. Experiences in audio, lighting, video, rigging, carpentry, stage operations, or stage management are all desirable, and a willingness to continually learn all of the above.
  • Able to read and interpret technical drawings and event plans, and to execute those plans independently and on teams.
  • Able to provide outstanding service and support all creative and technical requests.
  • Comfortable working at heights of ~25' on a tension wire grid, as well as from ladders and personnel lifts. Comfortable working in backstage show conditions, including but not limited to: fog, haze, strobes, dim lights, and loud sounds.

How We Work-Our Values

Mission-Focused: We inspire a lifelong love of science in everyone.

Audience-Driven: Everything we do begins with the people we serve.

Innovative: We are curious, take smart risks, share responsibility, and own outcomes.

Generous: We offer time and energy towards common goals.

Salary Range
$25.77—$26.44 USD
