Job description

The Boston Globe is seeking a Multiplatform/Wire Editor to play a critical role in publishing our journalism across digital and print platforms. This editor combines exceptional copy editing skills with strong news judgment, ensuring Globe journalism is accurate, compelling, ethically sound, and presented in ways that best serve our audiences.

Working with a high degree of independence, the Multiplatform/Wire Editor makes real-time editorial decisions in a fast-paced news environment. They evaluate stories for clarity, fairness, accuracy, and impact while determining how content should be presented across multiple platforms. Whether publishing breaking news, preparing the print report, or selecting and adapting wire coverage, this editor exercises sound editorial judgment under deadline and helps ensure every story reflects the standards of The Boston Globe.

This position includes evening and weekend shifts.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the final review after publication in print and digital, ensuring stories meet Globe standards for accuracy, fairness, style, clarity, and ethics.
  • Exercise independent editorial judgment in evaluating stories, determining publication readiness, and identifying issues that require additional reporting, editing, or escalation.
  • Write clear, accurate, and engaging headlines, decks, and display language optimized for both readers and digital platforms.
  • Select photos, apply metadata, tags, and taxonomies, and ensure stories are presented effectively across digital and print channels.
  • Select, edit, and publish wire content, making independent decisions about which stories best serve Globe audiences and adapting coverage as needed.
  • Merge reporting from multiple sources into cohesive, accurate stories when appropriate while maintaining editorial quality and attribution standards.
  • Prioritize competing assignments and manage multiple fast-moving stories simultaneously, adjusting priorities quickly as news develops.
  • Collaborate with reporters, editors, photographers, audience teams, and production colleagues to ensure timely, high-quality publication across platforms.
  • Assist in print production and page layout as needed, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are consistently met.
  • Contribute ideas that improve newsroom workflows, publishing practices, and the reader experience.
  • Foster a collaborative, audience-focused culture that values continuous learning, adaptability, and inclusion.

Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of experience in copy editing, production editing, or a related newsroom role.
  • Exceptional editing skills with demonstrated expertise in grammar, AP style, accuracy, clarity, and ethical decision-making.
  • Excellent news judgment and the ability to independently evaluate stories and make sound editorial decisions under deadline pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven newsroom.
  • Strong headline writing skills with the ability to write engaging, accurate display copy for multiple platforms.
  • Experience working with content management systems and digital publishing tools.
  • Familiarity with metadata, tagging, taxonomy, and digital publishing best practices.
  • Experience selecting, editing, or adapting wire service content preferred.
  • Print production and page layout experience is preferred.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across newsroom teams.

The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.

The hourly rate for this role is $43.95 - $56.41.

This range reflects the band for this role. We are committed to fair and market-informed compensation. It is anticipated that most qualified candidates could be hired within the midpoint of the range. Compensation for the successful candidate will be informed by their particular combination of skills, experience, and qualifications.

This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.
