Job description

Role Overview

This is a foundational role for our US launch. As Clinical Laboratory Director, you will serve as the Laboratory Director (LD), Clinical Consultant (CC), and Technical Supervisor (TS) under CLIA, and act as the final clinical sign-off for our Exome/Genome Sequencing (ES/GS) reports. Because this is a new laboratory, the role goes well beyond report sign-out: you will be directly involved in setting up the wet lab, resolving technical problems as they arise, and driving the laboratory through CLIA/CAP accreditation. You will work alongside our wet‑lab and bioinformatics teams (including our Korea headquarters) and have the technical authority to make and own laboratory decisions.

Core Responsibilities (The Must-Haves)
  • Clinical Directorship & Reporting: Serve as LD and CC. Provide final clinical sign-off on diagnostic reports for ES, GS, and targeted Sanger sequencing.
  • Variant Interpretation: Oversee variant interpretation under ACMG/AMP guidelines and make final clinical judgments on complex cases.
  • Wet‑Lab Setup & Operations: Establish and oversee wet‑lab workflows (DNA extraction, NGS library prep, sequencing). Define and validate assays and SOPs for a new laboratory.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve technical issues across the wet lab (e.g., library prep, QC, sequencing performance) as TS, working with the bench team and automation/instrument vendors.
  • Accreditation & Compliance: Lead the laboratory through CLIA certification and CAP accreditation, including inspection readiness, proficiency testing, QM, and personnel competency assessment.
  • Bioinformatics Oversight: Maintain a working understanding of our NGS pipeline — alignment, variant calling, annotation, and QC metrics — sufficient to critically evaluate pipeline outputs and flag issues affecting clinical results.
  • Clinical Consulting: Act as the primary clinical liaison for ordering US physicians regarding test results and clinical management.
  • Team Building & Mentorship: Recruit, train, and mentor local variant scientists and laboratory staff.
Why Join Us? (Compensation & Benefits)

We offer a competitive compensation package and, through a US Professional Employer Organization (PEO), comprehensive benefits:

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage for you and your family
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • PTO, paid sick leave, and company holidays
  • Medical Malpractice (Professional Liability) and Tech E&O insurance coverage

Lead the Future: Opportunity to lead the transition from managing traditional, labor‑intensive lab workflows to directing a next‑generation, AI‑automated genomic laboratory.

3billion is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.

Required Qualifications
  • Education & Board Certification: MD/DO with an active Texas Medical License, OR a Ph.D. with active ABMGG board certification in Clinical Molecular Genetics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics (LGG).
  • Clinical Expertise: Extensive hands‑on experience in variant interpretation for high‑complexity NGS (ES/GS) data.
  • Directorship Experience: Prior experience as a Director, Co‑Director, or Associate Director in a CLIA/CAP‑certified molecular genetics laboratory.
  • Laboratory Operations: Demonstrated involvement in wet‑lab operations and technical troubleshooting, and direct experience with CLIA/CAP accreditation processes.
  • Bioinformatics Literacy: Working knowledge of NGS bioinformatics pipelines and variant‑calling concepts.
Preferred Qualifications (The Nice‑to‑Haves)

While not strictly required, the following skills are highly valued:

  • Experience setting up and troubleshooting wet‑lab operations (DNA extraction, NGS library prep, sequencing) from the ground up.
  • A strong working knowledge of NGS bioinformatics pipelines, variant calling algorithms, and how AI intersects with genomic interpretation.
  • A track record of recruiting, building, and scaling local laboratory and scientific teams.
