Job description

Welcome to Annandale Village – Where Purpose Meets Community

Annandale Village is a nonprofit community supporting adults with developmental disabilities and acquired brain injuries. Our residents—known as Villagers—live with dignity, purpose, and connection across our campus.

Creating a community where Villagers feel safe, comfortable, respected, and at home is a responsibility shared by every employee. Our Security team plays an important role in protecting that environment by maintaining a visible and supportive presence, responding to emergencies, promoting campus safety, and building positive relationships with Villagers, employees, families, and visitors.

Position Purpose

The Security Officer helps maintain a safe, secure, and welcoming environment throughout Annandale Village for Villagers, employees, families, visitors, and guests.

Through a visible and approachable presence, proactive monitoring, emergency response, and positive engagement with the Annandale community, the Security Officer works to identify and respond to safety and security concerns. This role requires sound judgment, calm decision-making, strong observation skills, and an approach to security that balances safety with the dignity, independence, and individual needs of the Villagers we serve.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Promoting Campus Safety and Security

  • Maintain a visible, approachable, and professional security presence throughout the Annandale Village campus.
  • Conduct routine patrols of buildings, grounds, parking areas, and other designated spaces to identify and address potential safety or security concerns.
  • Monitor campus access, visitors, vehicles, security systems, and other designated areas in accordance with established procedures.
  • Respond appropriately to suspicious activity, unauthorized individuals, safety concerns, or other situations requiring Security assistance.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, maintenance concerns, or security issues and ensure appropriate follow-up.
  • Provide assistance and support to Villagers, employees, families, visitors, and guests as needed.

Emergency Preparedness and Response

  • Respond promptly and calmly to alarms, emergencies, incidents, and other situations requiring Security assistance.
  • Follow Annandale Village emergency and disaster preparedness plans and established response procedures.
  • Serve as the Designated Person in Authority during emergencies when assigned.
  • Support fire drills, emergency preparedness exercises, life-safety inspections, and other safety activities.
  • Communicate effectively with organizational leadership, emergency responders, and team members during emergency situations.
  • Provide CPR, First Aid, and other emergency assistance within the scope of training when needed.

Supporting Villagers and the Annandale Community

  • Interact with Villagers in a respectful, patient, and person-centered manner while promoting safety and independence.
  • Build positive relationships with Villagers and become familiar with individual communication and support needs that may be important during safety or emergency situations.
  • Recognize that Annandale Village is home to the Villagers we serve and perform security responsibilities in a manner that protects dignity, privacy, rights, and a sense of community.
  • Use sound judgment, respectful communication, and appropriate de-escalation techniques when responding to challenging or sensitive situations.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with employees, families, visitors, vendors, emergency responders, and community partners.

Documentation, Communication, and Teamwork

  • Document security activities, incidents, observations, and significant occurrences accurately and timely.
  • Monitor and appropriately use security, access-control, surveillance, communication, and safety equipment as assigned.
  • Maintain clear communication with Security team members and other departments to support campus safety and continuity between shifts.
  • Work collaboratively with departments across Annandale Village to respond to safety, security, and emergency needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding Villagers, employees, incidents, and organizational information.
  • Participate in required meetings, orientation, training, emergency preparedness exercises, and organizational initiatives.

Other Responsibilities

  • Support special events, campus activities, and other organizational needs requiring Security presence.
  • Safely operate organizational vehicles, golf carts, and other equipment required for assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintain required training, certifications, and competencies.
  • Follow Annandale Village policies, procedures, safety standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Perform other duties in the best interest of Annandale Village and the Villagers we serve.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of two years of related security, safety, emergency response, military, law enforcement, healthcare security, or similar experience.
  • Strong observation, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and respond appropriately during emergencies or challenging situations.
  • Ability to follow established policies, emergency procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with Villagers, employees, families, visitors, and emergency responders.

Preferred Qualifications
