Job Description:
Summary:
The Trauma Registrar is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:
Data Collection and Entry:
Trauma Registrars gather information from various sources, including medical records, emergency room reports, trauma nursing documentation records, EMS records and databases, and other relevant documentation, and enter it into the trauma registry. The Trauma Registrar is responsible for entry of all ICD, ISS and procedure codes for each trauma patient.
Data Analysis and Reporting:
Trauma Registrars analyze the collected data, identify trends, and generate reports to support quality improvement efforts, research initiatives, and facility funding.
Quality Improvement:
The Trauma Registrar will identify areas where care can be improved, contributing to better patient outcomes.
Coding and Abstraction:
Trauma Registrars utilize coding systems like ICD-10 and AIS to classify injuries, procedures, and diagnoses, ensuring accurate data entry.
Maintaining Registry Integrity:
Trauma Registrars ensure the accuracy and completeness of the trauma registry data, keeping it up-to-date and adhering to established standards and state trauma rules. Trauma registry data is used to support funding requests for trauma centers and to inform resource allocation decisions.
Performance Improvement:
The Trauma Registrar will work closely with the Trauma PI Coordinator to assess and export data used to track key performance indicators, such as mortality rates, complication rates, and length of stay, allowing hospitals to identify areas for improvement.
Interacting with Healthcare Professionals:
Trauma Registrars work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to gather information, clarify data, and participate in performance improvement activities.
Upholding Patient Privacy:
Trauma Registrars adhere to strict patient privacy regulations, safeguarding sensitive information within the trauma registry.
Participation in Trauma Committees:
Trauma Registrars may be involved in trauma committee meetings, contributing their expertise to discussions on data analysis, performance improvement, and patient care.
Accreditation:
Trauma Registrars must ensure all data is accurate and complete. Their work is directly reflected in state trauma site visits and must be up to date to ensure state designation is awarded.
Adhering to State Trauma Rules:
Trauma Registrars are required to have all data entered, and verified, within specified timeframes in order to meet state rules, and thus maintain state designation as a trauma center.
Trauma Registrars are required to obtain, and maintain, all courses, certifications and CE as required by state and national trauma rules.
Database Entry:
Trauma Registrars are required to submit to various state and national registries that may include those from the State of TN, State of VA, TQIP, NTDB, and TBI registry.
Continuing Education:
Trauma Registrars are required to obtain specified hours of annual CE credit to maintain their position through state rules.
Research and Epidemiology:
The Trauma Registrar will export data for research studies. The data allows researchers to study injury patterns, risk factors, and the effectiveness of different treatments, leading to advancements in trauma care.
Injury Prevention: The Trauma Registrar will work closely with the Injury Prevention Coordinator to pull data for identifying injury trends and developing targeted prevention strategies to reduce the incidence of trauma.
Requirements:
Associate's degree in a clinical healthcare field preferred.
Minimum three years experience in an acute hospital setting preferred.
Requires strong familiarity with patient record content and format.
Be knowledgeable concerning medical and billing procedures. Must possess strong computer skills in Microsoft Office; utilize CPT and ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding system, and knowledge of medical billing procedures.
CITI training is recommended.
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) Trauma Registrar Course with certification is preferred.
ICD-10 Course is preferred.
On hire and annual continuing education credit is required through state trauma rules.
