Work EnvironmentTechnical teams, data infrastructure projectsBusiness teams, reporting and insights
CertificationsData engineering certifications (e.g., Google Cloud, AWS)Data analysis certifications (e.g., Microsoft, Tableau)

Weekend Data Engineering focuses on building and maintaining data pipelines and infrastructure, requiring technical skills and cloud platform knowledge. In contrast, Weekend Data Analysis emphasizes interpreting data, creating reports, and providing insights, often using visualization tools. Both roles are essential in data-driven organizations but serve different functions during weekend projects or part-time work.

Are weekend data engineers still in demand?

Weekend data engineers are still in demand as companies seek flexible staffing for data pipeline maintenance, troubleshooting, and project work outside regular hours. Skills in cloud platforms, SQL, and data tools like Apache Spark remain valuable, and many organizations require support during weekends to ensure continuous data operations.

Do weekend data engineers need to work on weekends?

Weekend data engineers typically work during regular business hours and do not usually need to work on weekends unless there are urgent data issues or scheduled maintenance. Some roles may require occasional weekend work for system updates or troubleshooting, but it is not a standard expectation for all positions. Flexibility depends on the company's policies and project deadlines.

Data Engineer
The Opportunity:
Ever-expanding technology like IoT, machine learning, and artificial intelligence means that there's more structured and unstructured data available today than ever before. As a data engineer, you know that organizing data can yield pivotal insights when it's gathered from disparate sources. We need an experienced data professional like you to help our clients find answers in their data to impact important missions-from fraud detection to cancer research to national intelligence.
As a data engineer at Booz Allen, you'll use your expertise to help build advanced technology solutions and lead data engineering activities on some of the most mission-driven projects in the industry. You'll guide data engineering activities by overseeing the development and deployment of pipelines and platforms that organize and make disparate data meaningful.
In this role, you'll collaborate closely with AI Model Engineers, Network and Cloud Architects, the ISSE, and other technical leaders to guide the development of scalable, mission-aligned data pipelines. You'll apply your expertise in data engineering, exploratory analysis, and feature development to shape how datasets are assessed, designed, transformed, and maintained for AI/ML workloads. While supporting a cross-functional technical environment, you'll help ensure high-quality, well-governed data flows that enable reliable model performance across operational, research, and enterprise systems.
Work with us to use data for good.
You Have:
  • 6+ years of experience as a data engineer
  • Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable data pipelines for structured and unstructured data
  • Experience preparing validated, normalized, and secure datasets for AI/ML model development
  • Experience implementing data governance practices, including access control, lineage tracking, and dataset documentation
  • Experience developing dashboards and metrics for data and pipeline monitoring
  • Experience building automated ETL workflows and CI/CD pipelines for data processes
  • Experience optimizing data workflows across on-prem, cloud, or hybrid environments
  • Ability to monitor and improve pipeline performance in coordination with operations teams
  • TS/SCI clearance with a polygraph
  • HS diploma or GED and 6+ years of experience with data normalization and data pipelines, or Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of experience with data normalization and data pipelines

Nice If You Have:
  • 10+ years of experience as a data engineer
  • Experience with distributed data and compute tools, such as Spark, Databricks, Hadoop, Hive, or Kafka
  • Experience with cloud environments, such as AWS or Azure
  • Experience developing real-time or streaming data applications
  • Experience evaluating emerging technologies for data processing or AI/ML workflows
  • Experience working in environments with security, compliance, or ISSE oversight
  • Experience developing or supporting visualization tools and frameworks
  • Experience supporting AI/ML model development pipelines
  • Bachelor's degree

Clearance:
Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; TS/SCI clearance with polygraph is required.
