Job description

Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse in Labor & Delivery/OB is responsible for providing skilled nursing care to patients in an 18-bed unit, working 4x12 or 3x12 night shifts (1800-0630). This role involves a wide range of antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care, including fetal monitoring, medication administration, and assisting with deliveries. The RN will also float to the pediatric unit as needed.
Location:Decatur, Illinois, United States
Responsibilities:
- Assist with sterile speculum exams and sterile vaginal exams.
- Perform NST (Non Stress Tests) and OCT (Oxytocin Challenge Tests).
- Assess reflexes, edema, and clonus.
- Triage obstetrical patients.
- Use external and internal fetal heart monitoring; recognize and treat abnormal fetal heart rate patterns.
- Administer blood and blood products; start and maintain peripheral IVs; use infusion pumps.
- Administer antihypertensives, Magnesium Sulfate, Pitocin, and Prostaglandins.
- Assist with high-risk and vaginal deliveries; circulate for C-sections; manage hemorrhage/shock; recover C-section patients.
- Perform neonatal care in the delivery room, including APGAR scoring, ID/Security Banding, and thermoregulation.
- Provide newborn care, including circumcision assistance, cord care, discharge teaching, and newborn assessment.
- Manage pain with epidural anesthesia and pain assessment.
- Provide postpartum care, including episiotomy/incisional care, Foley catheter insertion, and fundus/lochia/perineum care.
- Care for patients with vaginal deliveries, Cesarean sections, multiple births, postpartum hemorrhage, and pregnancy-induced hypertension.
- Adhere to isolation precautions/PPE and administer vaccines.
- Float to peds, based on need.
Required Skills & Certifications:
- Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery experience.
- Active Registered Nurse license in the state of working (IL or in application process).
- ACLS, BLS, NRP, and Fetal Monitoring certifications.
- Experience with Antepartum care, Facility births/month <100, Labor and Delivery, High Risk Antepartum, Level I Nursery, LDRP, Mother/Baby.
- Experience with antepartum care procedures: Assist with sterile speculum exam (effacement, dilation, station, presentation), NST (Non Stress Tests), OCT (Oxytocin Challenge Tests), Reflex checks / edema assessment / clonus, Sterile vaginal exam, Triage of obstetrical patients, Use of EFM (External Fetal Heart Monitoring).
- Experience with fetal monitoring skills: Use of External Fetal Monitoring, Use of Internal Fetal Monitoring, Recognition and Treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns.
- Experience with IV Therapy/Phlebotomy Skills: Administration of blood & blood products, Start & maintain peripheral IV, Use of infusion pumps / drips / IV monitoring.
- Experience with Medication and Administration Skills: Antihypertensives, Magnesium Sulfate therapy, Pitocin (oxytocin), Prostaglandins.
- Experience with Labor and Delivery Management Skills: Assist with high risk delivery, Assist with vaginal delivery, Circulate for C-section, Hemorrhage/shock, Recover C-Section, Sterile vaginal exam.
- Experience with Neonatal Care in Delivery Room Skills: APGAR scores, ID/Security Banding, Radiant Warmers/Thermoregulation.
- Experience with Newborn Care Skills: Assist with Circumcision/Assess site post-op, Cord Care, Discharge teaching to parents, Infant Identification, Metabolic Screen, Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Newborn Assessment, Newborn hypoglycemia, Teach Circumcision care to parents, Thermoregulation.
- Experience with Pain Management Skills: Epidural Anesthesia, Pain assessment & management.
- Experience with Postpartum Care and Procedures Skills: Episiotomy/Incisional Care, Foley Catheter insertion, Fundus/lochia/perineum care, Wound Assessment and Care.
- Experience with Postpartum Care of the Patient with: Vaginal Delivery, Cesarean Section, Couplet Care, Multiple Births, Postpartum Hemorrhage, Pregnancy induced hypertension.
