Job description

Security Assistant

The Security Assistant supports the Lancaster Police Departments security operations by monitoring security systems, assisting with access control, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. Responsibilities include conducting routine security checks, responding to incidents, and maintaining security records. The role requires strong attention to detail, the ability to handle sensitive information, and effective communication skills to coordinate with security personnel, employees, and the public.

This position reports to the Enforcement Support Senior Specialist.

Must be available to work nights, weekends, and special events.

Selection Process

Appointment to the Security Assistant position is subject to a required, sequential selection process. Candidates must successfully pass each phase of the process to proceed to the next phase, including interviews, providing a copy of guard card, submitting a Personal History Statement for the background investigation, a comprehensive background investigation conducted by a designated background investigator, including a background interview, and a tuberculosis (TB) test. Failure to pass any phase will result in removal from the selection process.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Regularly monitoring assigned areas, including walking or driving to ensure safety and security.
  • Incident Reporting, documenting any security breaches, incidents, crimes or suspicious activities in an incident report for management review.
  • Coordinating with local police or emergency responders as needed.
  • Access control, managing entry and exit of persons and vehicles at various facilities. This may involve checking identification, bag inspection and issuing visitor passes.
  • Monitoring CCTV cameras and alarms, for unusual activity or alerts.
  • Supports the City's special events by ensuring a safe and secure environment for attendees, staff, and vendors.
  • Assist with crowd control, directing foot traffic, and managing entry/exit points.
  • Assist in setting up and dismantling security equipment as needed for events.
  • Remain alert and adaptable to changing conditions in a fast-paced event environment.
  • Enforces safety and security measures at City events.
  • Assess situations and coordinate the need for additional resources in accordance with protocol.
  • May intervene in incidents to de-escalate conflicts and ensure the safety of individuals and property.

The duties listed above are not intended to be all-inclusive. An employee may also perform other related duties as assigned by their immediate supervisor. This position is considered non-exempt.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid California security guard registration (Guard Card), Required, must obtain prior to hiring.
  • One (1) year of experience working in security, law enforcement, high public contact and/or customer service environment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid California class "C" driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One (1) year of experience in incident reporting.
  • Training in de-escalation or conflict resolution.
