What are the typical responsibilities of a weekend cook?

A weekend cook is responsible for preparing and cooking meals, often during weekends or on a part-time basis. Duties typically include following recipes, ensuring kitchen cleanliness, managing food inventory, and sometimes assisting with menu planning. Weekend cooks may work in restaurants, care facilities, schools, or private homes, and are expected to maintain food safety standards while delivering quality dishes. Good time management and multitasking skills are essential for handling busy meal periods.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend cook?

To thrive as a Weekend Cook, you need a solid understanding of food preparation, kitchen safety, and basic culinary techniques, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent and relevant food handling certifications. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, food storage systems, and point-of-sale (POS) software is typically required. Strong time management, teamwork, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure that meals are prepared safely, efficiently, and to a high standard, even during busy periods.

What are the typical challenges faced by a weekend cook and how can they be managed?

Weekend Cooks often experience a fast-paced environment due to higher customer volumes and limited staffing during weekends. Managing multiple orders simultaneously while maintaining consistency and quality can be challenging. Effective time management, strong organizational skills, and clear communication with team members are crucial for success. Proactively prepping ingredients before peak times and collaborating closely with servers and kitchen staff can help ensure smooth operations. Being adaptable and staying calm under pressure are also key to thriving in this role.

Are you an experienced Cook, Food Service Worker, Food Preparation Specialist, or Kitchen Professional looking for a consistent weekend schedule?

In this role, you'll prepare nutritious, well-balanced meals for youth ages 10–17 and staff while helping create a safe, stable, and supportive environment for young people during a challenging time in their lives.

This is more than food service. The meals you prepare are part of creating a sense of routine, comfort, and care for youth who need it most.

Schedule

Saturday & Sunday | 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM

If you're looking for a part-time cooking job, weekend food service position, or predictable Saturday-Sunday schedule, we'd love to hear from you.

  • Perform large-volume food preparation and cooking in an institutional or residential setting
  • Plan menus that meet USDA and NC Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) requirements
  • Accommodate individual dietary needs and incorporate cultural diversity into menu planning
  • Maintain high standards for food safety, kitchen sanitation, cleanliness, and organization
  • Monitor food inventory and order, receive, store, and track food and kitchen supplies
  • Follow established recipes, portion guidelines, food-handling procedures, and health and safety standards
  • Maintain accurate records related to meal preparation, inventory, and food service
  • Help ensure the kitchen operates efficiently and meals are prepared and served on schedule
  • Work collaboratively with residential and program staff to support the needs of the youth we serve
What We're Looking For
  • 21 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • At least 1 year of experience in cooking or food preparation
  • Experience preparing meals for large groups, institutions, schools, residential programs, healthcare settings, or similar environments is preferred
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, safe food handling, and kitchen cleanliness
  • Ability to follow recipes, menus, dietary requirements, and established food-service procedures
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently while also being a dependable member of a team
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
  • Willingness to complete required training, including CPR and First Aid
Why Work with Methodist Home for Children?

At MHC, every role contributes to our mission of helping children and families find safety, stability, and hope.

You'll be part of a team that values:
  • Meaningful, mission-driven work
  • A supportive and collaborative work environment
  • The opportunity to positively impact the lives of young people
  • A consistent weekend-only schedule
  • Professional development and required training
