Summary:
Cook Children's, in Fort Worth, Texas, is seeking a full-time hematopathologist/general anatomic pathologist to join their growing team to support the hematology, hematology-oncology, and flow cytometry sections of the laboratory. Duties include directing the hematology/hematopathology program and sign-out of a mix of hematopathology (including flow cytometry) and general surgical pathology cases. Additional opportunities in transfusion medicine and coagulation are available if interested. The candidate will have an MD or DO degree (or equivalent), be board certified/board eligible in hematopathology and anatomic or anatomic/clinical pathology. Board certification in pediatric pathology or experience in pediatric hematopathology is preferred but not required. The candidate must be eligible for licensing in Texas.
The primary focus of the institution is on extraordinary patient care with a very close consultative relationship between the department and the clinical services. The candidate would join a department which includes 3 pediatric pathologists, a dual-boarded pediatric pathologist/ hematopathologist, a dual-boarded cytopathologist/hematopathologist, a dual-boarded pediatric pathologist/molecular pathologist, a PhD clinical microbiologist, and a PhD clinical chemist. Approximately 350 bone marrow biopsies, 250 flow cytometries (including minimal residual disease analysis), 500 peripheral smear reviews, 50 lymph node biopsies, and over 1200 hematology-oncology cerebrospinal fluid cytologies are performed annually, in addition to about 7000 surgical specimens, 200+ cytologies, and 20-30 autopsies. The program supports very active hematology and hematology-oncology groups, with specialists in pediatric leukemia/lymphomas, histiocytic neoplasms, sickle cell disease, thrombosis, and bone marrow transplant.
The department also supports a very busy gastroenterology group, with biopsies accounting for more than thirty percent of the total surgical pathology volume. Other active departments include a highly regarded neurosciences program with a large epilepsy center, an intraoperative MRI, 18 neurologists, dedicated neuroradiology and 3 full-time pediatric neurosurgeons. There is also a pediatric stroke program supported by an endowed chair in coagulation and a neuro-intensive care unit. The cardiology/cardiac surgery service includes 3 cardiac surgeons and 21 fulltime pediatric cardiologists supported by their own cardiovascular intensive care unit. The Cook Children's system also includes very busy pediatric and neonatal intensive care units.
