Role description:
We are seeking a Construction Inspector to join our team and work on projects for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey within the tri-state area. This full-time position may include intermittent opportunities for overtime work. You will use your technical knowledge and experience to meet the critical transportation infrastructure needs of the bi-state region's people, businesses, and visitors. Experience working on large scale aviation and rail projects is strongly preferred.
Role accountabilities:
In this role, you will conduct daily inspections, supervise, and control construction activities to ensure the overall safety of the site, compliance with permit conditions, and coordination with other city agencies is being maintained. You will closely monitor and supervise the performance of the contractors to ensure they adhere to technical requirements and maintain a high level of responsiveness and effectiveness.
Perform construction inspection activities throughout all phases of the project.
  • Prepare daily narratives, special inspection reports, time-and-material records, and unit price documentation.
  • Identify potential extra work issues and notify the Resident Engineer/Assistant Resident Engineer.
  • Prepare extra work estimates and supporting documentation.
  • Review plans for constructability and provide comments.
  • Review contractor payment requests and recommend reasonableness.
  • Coordinate inspections at multiple work locations.
  • Perform quality assurance inspections of completed work.
  • Verify compliance with safety requirements.
  • Coordinate work activities, closures, and utility shutdowns with JFK Operations and Maintenance staff.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience inspecting construction work varying in size (projects ranging from $500K to $5M+) and complexity (multiple crews and crew sizes per shift).
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Must be able to successfully obtain and maintain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge, including passing all required security threat assessments, fingerprint-based criminal history records checks, and background investigations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience preparing daily reports, inspection reports, and contract documentation.
  • Experience reviewing contractor payment applications and documenting extra work.
  • Ability to coordinate with contractors, Resident Engineers, and facility personnel.
  • Working knowledge of construction safety requirements.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Willing to work weekends and night shifts when required.
