Job description

Job Title: Highway and Bridge Inspector

Job Description

The Highway and Bridge Inspector observes and inspects civil engineering construction work to ensure full compliance with project specifications on a major interstate interchange reconstruction project. This role focuses on roadway, bridge, and site civil construction, including bridge replacements and widenings, roadway expansions, retaining structures, and concrete and asphalt paving. The inspector works independently on active roadway and bridge construction projects and supports inspectors on more complex assignments, with a strong emphasis on documentation, communication, safety, and quality control.

Responsibilities

  • Observe and inspect civil engineering construction work to verify it conforms to project specifications, standards, and applicable requirements.
  • Perform field construction inspection and documentation services on commercial, municipal, institutional, and heavy highway and bridge projects.
  • Inspect reconstruction and complete interchange reconfiguration activities, including flyover bridges, bridge replacements, bridge widenings, roadway expansions, and roadway widening.
  • Monitor construction of 21 bridges and associated structures, including mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls, retained earth structures, cast-in-place concrete walls, pile and lagging walls, and mass earth fills or embankments.
  • Inspect rock cuts, rock blasting operations, portland cement concrete (PCC) paving, and asphalt resurfacing to ensure compliance with specifications and safety requirements.
  • Conduct roadway inspection activities, including oversight of grading, drainage, and pavement construction.
  • Perform bridge inspection tasks, including monitoring reinforced concrete bridge construction, formwork, rebar placement, and concrete pours.
  • Inspect site civil work such as utilities, erosion control measures, and grading to confirm adherence to plans and procedures.
  • Review job site safety conditions daily, identify potential hazards, and take immediate action to document and help resolve safety issues.
  • Understand and adhere to OSHA safety standards and corporate safety policies at all times.
  • Ensure contractors comply with all applicable industry standards, contract documents, and client requirements.
  • Prepare detailed, accurate, and timely reports documenting construction progress, inspection activities, and testing results.
  • Record and report daily forms and logs as required by project procedures and contract specifications.
  • Maintain necessary inspection records, including measurements of field quantities, field test results, and other data needed to determine contractor compliance.
  • Conduct and document field tests and other required tests to verify materials and workmanship meet contract requirements.
  • Review all documentation for completeness and accuracy prior to submission.
  • Submit accurate weekly timesheets, mileage logs, and expense reports on time.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, clients, project staff, and supervisors to coordinate inspection activities and clarify requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with field crews, forepersons, and project managers to understand daily work plans and inspection priorities.
  • Resolve problems and issues at the lowest practical level, escalating only when necessary.
  • Report to the project site daily, connect with the assigned crew, and align on tasks and areas of focus for the day.
  • Observe, inspect, and document contractor work in real time to verify that standards, specifications, and policies are followed.
  • Support traffic control monitoring by observing traffic control setups and operations to help ensure they meet project and safety requirements.
  • Maintain required certifications and stay current with project-specific procedures and software tools used for documentation and reporting.

Essential Skills

  • ACI / FCON (GDOT Concrete Certification) Field Concrete Certificate.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of civil inspection experience, specifically in roadway, bridge, reinforced concrete, or site civil inspection projects.
  • Demonstrated experience inspecting reinforced concrete construction.
  • Ability to understand and interpret construction plans, specifications, and procedures.
  • Basic math skills, including the ability to perform geometry and trigonometry calculations relevant to construction inspection.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in a professional field environment.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member on active construction sites.
  • Proficiency or strong comfort with computers and new software platforms such as Procore, Heavy Job, E-Builder, Bentley Synchro, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Office Suite, and PDF editing tools.
  • Physical capability to perform field inspections, including standing, walking, climbing, and working in various weather conditions and on active roadways and bridges.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with soils, asphalt, aggregates, and soil mechanics is highly helpful.
  • Traffic control experience, particularly in monitoring traffic control operations, is very helpful.
  • Experience with bridge foundations, including pile driving, drilled shafts, and spread footings, is highly desirable.
  • NICET certification is a plus.
  • ICC certifications are a plus.
  • Completion of a GDOT CEIT program is beneficial.
  • Experience with pit testing and asphalt testing is an advantage.
  • Traffic control-related certifications or training are beneficial.
  • Experience on large, complex highway or interchange projects is advantageous, especially those involving multiple bridge modifications, MSE walls, and extensive lane expansions.

Work Environment

This role is based in the field on a large, multi-year interstate interchange reconfiguration project in a heavily traveled metropolitan corridor. The project includes approximately 8 miles of interstate work, multiple bridge modifications and replacements, extensive lane expansions, collector-distributor lanes, ramp reconfigurations, MSE walls, and a smart work zone system for real-time traffic management during construction. The inspector reports directly to the project site, meets with the assigned crew, foreperson, or project manager each day, and spends most of the day outdoors observing and documenting active construction. Work occurs in a dynamic heavy highway and bridge construction environment that may involve working near live traffic, heavy equipment, elevated structures, and active bridge and roadway operations. The schedule may include day and potential night shifts, as well as work in varied weather conditions. The role requires regular use of computers and project software for documentation and reporting. A company vehicle (such as a light-duty truck) and fuel card are provided for travel to and from the job site. The project uses a design-build-finance delivery method, and work progresses at a fast pace, requiring adaptability, strong communication, and consistent adherence to safety and quality standards.
