Job description

Job Introduction
This is semi-skilled work at the Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) plant division. Bargaining unit position.
Nature Of Work
An employee in this class performs semi-skilled work of moderate difficulty in areas of operations, mechanical, co-generation, electrical, instrumentation or building and grounds. Under general supervision, the employee performs duties and assigned tasks in conformance with established procedures requiring the exercise of reasonable initiative and independent judgment. Many work activities involve hazardous materials and/or equipment and employees must comply with appropriate safety precautions when dealing with gas system, electrical system, dangerous chemicals, and other similar components and processes within the plant environment. Shift work will be required including nights, weekends, and holidays. Working extended hours in emergency situations may also be required. Tasks require the ability to work in a team environment. Work is reviewed by observation, results attained, and reports submitted.
Examples of Duties
Accompanies other plant technicians/assists in performing routine co-generation inspections; assists with adjustment of digester gas valves; assists with completing advanced preventive maintenance requirements; assists with inspection of gas mixers; assists with inspection of gas room equipment (building 080 and 081); assists with troubleshooting and repair of unit controls.
Assists with inspection of stand-by generator building; assists with operation and maintenance of wet well.
Performs operations and maintenance tasks in the collection system pump stations.
Collects wastewater system samples for testing and analysis; cleans and calibrates conveyor belt scale; records and interprets co-gen readings; transfers pellets from hot silo.
Installs and repairs backflow preventors; operates and sets up portable pumping equipment; operates MCC 48 and remote gas compressor controls; operates, adjusts, and monitors belt press equipment; operates and maintains stationary and portable generators; tests plant and pump station machinery and apparatus using basic electrical test equipment.
Performs visual inspections per standard operating procedures; paints pumps and motors, piping and all other equipment; performs manual and semi-skilled operational and maintenance activities uses tech manual library to obtain mechanical/maintenance information; loads trucks from hauling contractor in accordance with standard operating procedures; monitors inventory levels; generates charts, graphs and/or reports using computer.
Performs normal daily operations associated with O2 generation; performs normal shut down and secure/button up O2 plant; performs routine operational lab tests (DR-2000, 30 min settleable, cent. MLSS, turb, etc.); restarts all areas of the treatment plant and pump stations after power failures; verifies auto blanket finders are working properly in required areas.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of: basic safety practices; auto controls; 24/125 DCV systems; MCC 92; 480v distribution panel; start air system; the activated sludge process; the nitrogen cycle and where in the plant it cycles; principles of chlorination and de-chlorination; thickener operation; CMMS; SCADA system; pump station operations; treatment facility (including recycle flows) hydraulic flow path.
Ability to: establish and maintain productive working relationships with co-workers and the public; understand and follow written and oral instructions; lift 50pounds; climb ladders; work in confined spaces; utilize basic safety practices (e.g. lockout/tagout); apply basic computer skills; demonstrate basic electrical safety procedures; learn new tasks and work practices.
Skill in: use of hand tools; use of small power tools; basic computer skills.
Minimum Qualifications
AWT employees - Must meet criterion for Level II on the job skills matrix.
Others - Graduation from an accredited high school or GED with 4 years of utility experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: External hires have 1 year beyond the standard probationary period to achieve the qualifying skills set.
Licenses or Certifications
Possession of a valid Florida class E driver's license. Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) preferred.
Examination
Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
