The CNC Machine Operator is responsible for setting up and running computer-controlled equipment used to cut, shape, drill, or finish precision parts. This position requires someone who can follow technical instructions, keep machines running accurately, and recognize small production problems before they result in wasted material or defective parts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC mills, lathes, or other computer-controlled production equipment.
  • Load raw materials and properly secure workpieces, fixtures, and cutting tools before machining begins.
  • Read blueprints, job specifications, measurements, and production instructions to understand each part requirement.
  • Enter or load approved machine programs and adjust speeds, feeds, tooling, and basic machine settings when required.
  • Monitor machines during production for unusual vibration, tool wear, incorrect cuts, or other operating problems.
  • Measure completed parts using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other precision measuring tools.
  • Make minor machine or tooling adjustments when parts begin moving outside required tolerances.
  • Record production quantities, inspection results, material usage, and machine issues accurately.
  • Perform routine cleaning and basic preventive maintenance to keep equipment in dependable working condition.
  • Follow shop safety procedures and maintain an organized workstation.

These duties reflect current O*NET CNC operator responsibilities, including machine setup, blueprint review, precision measurement, tooling changes, monitoring, and equipment maintenance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent technical training.
  • Previous CNC, machining, manufacturing, or machine-operation experience preferred.
  • Ability to read basic blueprints and understand dimensions and tolerances.
  • Familiarity with precision measuring instruments.
  • Basic mechanical and troubleshooting ability.
  • Comfortable standing for extended periods and working around production machinery.
  • Strong attention to accuracy, quality, and workplace safety.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Paid vacation, sick leave, and company holidays.
  • 401(k) or retirement plan options.
  • Overtime and shift-differential opportunities where applicable.
  • Paid technical and equipment training.
  • Safety equipment and work-uniform assistance.
  • Performance-based pay increases or bonuses.
