Job description

Cloud Software Engineer

We are currently seeking a Cloud Software Engineer (CSWE3) to develop, maintain, and enhance complex and diverse Big-Data Cloud systems based on documented requirements. The Cloud Software Engineer will directly contribute to all stages of back-end processing, analyzing, and indexing, and will provide expertise in Cloud Computing, the Hadoop ecosystem, Distributed Computing, Information Retrieval (IR), and Object-Oriented Design.

Work Schedule

Standard business hours. No regular night, weekend, or holiday work is required for this position. No pager duty. No CONUS or OCONUS travel required.


Essential Responsibilities (describe the day-to-day)

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance Big-Data Cloud systems, working individually or as part of a team, including implementing Cloud MapReduce workflows and Cloud Distributed Coordination Framework code.

  • Review, test, and debug software components against design requirements, resolve problem reports, and document results.

  • Apply appropriate software development and design methodologies, including requirements analysis from the system level down to individual components.

  • Advise on system design trade-offs, including hardware/software choices, software reuse, and COTS/GOTS alternatives to new development.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for Cloud Computing, Hadoop, and Information Retrieval, guiding the team through design, development, and testing.

  • Architect solutions to complex Cloud Software Engineering problems, such as efficiently processing and retrieving large volumes of data.

  • Oversee tasks and delegate programming and testing responsibilities across one or more teams, monitoring performance and quality.

  • Select and refine the software development process in coordination with the customer and systems engineering.

  • Manage multi-node Cloud based installations and recommend new technologies and process improvements for complex cloud projects.


Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands

General office environment. The work environment is fast-paced and sometimes involves extreme deadline pressures. The nature of the work requires a high degree of teamwork and cooperation with other members of the staff as well as individuals across the Company and Customers.


Minimum Requirements (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Twelve (12) years of software engineering experience on programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity, including at least four (4) years with Big-Data cloud technologies and/or Distributed Computing, and two (2) years with Cloud and/or Distributed Computing Information Retrieval (IR).

  • One (1) year of hands-on experience in each of the following: implementing code against Cloud Big Table, Cloud Distributed File Systems, and Cloud Distributed Coordination Frameworks; implementing complex MapReduce analytics; architecting Cloud Computing solutions; debugging Cloud based Distributed Computing Frameworks; and managing multi-node Cloud based installations.

  • Experience in Computer Network Operations, including utility computing, network management, and virtualization (VMware or VirtualBox), along with multi-node management and installation using Python, CFEngine, Bash, Ruby, or related technologies.

  • Experience in Information Assurance, including securing Cloud based and distributed applications through firewalls, PKI certificates, and server authentication.

  • Experience in Object-Oriented Design and Programming, including Java, Eclipse or a similar development environment, Maven, and RESTful web services.

  • Experience with Cloud and Distributed Computing technologies and IR tools such as YARN, J2EE, MapReduce, Zookeeper, HDFS, HBase, JMS, Apache Lucene, Apache Solr, or MongoDB.

  • Experience ingesting, parsing, and analyzing disparate data sources and formats (XML, JSON, CSV, binary, sequence/map files, Avro), plus Aspect-Oriented Design and Development.

  • Experience debugging and profiling Cloud and Distributed installations, including JVM memory management and Java application profiling, on UNIX/Linux (CentOS).

  • Experience with at least one SIGINT collection discipline (FORNSAT, CABLE, Terrestrial/Microwave, Overhead, or ELINT), including geolocation, emitter identification, signal applications, joint program collection platforms, and dataflow/signals characterization analysis.

  • Experience with configuration management tools such as Subversion, ClearQuest, or Razor.


Technical environment includes:

  • Front-end: JavaScript (and eventually TypeScript), React/JSX

  • Back-end: Node.js/JavaScript, Rust, Python, shell scripting

  • Micro-services: Kubernetes, Helm Charts, service mesh, multi-site applications, load balancing, cloud migration

  • Tech stack: NiFi, Jest, Grafana, InfluxDB, Elasticsearch, Redis, MySQL, Apache Superset, RabbitMQ/Kafka, Ansible/Salt, Terraform, WebSockets, Neo4j, and agency security labels (CAMKEY, LAC, COI, etc.)


Security Clearance Required

Top Secret SCI w/Polygraph


Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline from an accredited college or university, including at least four (4) years in programs utilizing Big-Data cloud technologies and/or Distributed Computing.

    • Four (4) years of cloud software engineering experience on projects with similar Big-Data systems may be substituted for a bachelor's degree.

    • A Master's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline may be substituted for two (2) years of experience.



Minimum Years of Experience

Twelve (12) years of software engineering experience.


Required Certifications

Cloudera Certified Hadoop Developer certification may be substituted for one (1) year of Cloud experience (not required, but accepted as a substitution).


Preferred Qualifications

  • JBLOCKS and CASPORT familiarity.
