Weekend Car T Cell Therapy information

What is a Weekend CAR T Cell Therapy specialist?

A Weekend CAR T Cell Therapy specialist is a healthcare professional, often a nurse or technician, who is responsible for administering and monitoring CAR T cell therapy treatments during weekends. CAR T cell therapy is an advanced cancer treatment that uses genetically modified T cells to target and destroy cancer cells. Specialists working weekend shifts ensure that patients receive timely care and monitoring, as the therapy involves continuous observation for potential side effects. Their role includes preparing treatment, managing patient symptoms, and collaborating with oncologists to ensure patient safety.

What are some unique challenges faced by Weekend CAR T Cell Therapy nurses compared to those working weekday shifts?

Weekend CAR T Cell Therapy nurses often handle a higher level of autonomy due to reduced onsite staffing and support services during weekends. They must be adept at managing urgent situations and collaborating efficiently with on-call physicians and remote specialists. Additionally, weekend nurses are responsible for closely monitoring patients for unique and sometimes acute side effects of CAR T therapy, such as cytokine release syndrome or neurotoxicity, and must be prepared to implement rapid interventions. This role requires strong communication, excellent clinical judgment, and the ability to adapt to a dynamic, sometimes unpredictable work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend CAR T Cell Therapy nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend CAR T Cell Therapy Nurse, you need a solid background in oncology nursing, experience with immunotherapies, and an active RN license. Familiarity with CAR T-cell protocols, infusion pumps, and EHR systems is essential, along with certifications such as OCN or BLS. Excellent critical thinking, emotional resilience, and strong patient communication skills help nurses manage complex cases and provide compassionate care during challenging treatments. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, effective therapy administration and supporting patients through intensive, potentially life-threatening procedures.

We are particularly interested in physicians with several years of experience beyond fellowship who have established clinical expertise in hematologic malignancies and a strong interest in advancing cellular therapy programs. This opportunity offers the ability to contribute to an innovative program focused on CAR-T therapy, bispecific antibodies, clinical trials, and the multidisciplinary care of patients with complex blood cancers.

Clinical Practice and Location

The physicianโ€™s primary clinical practice will be based at Duke Cancer Center Raleigh, a comprehensive, community-based cancer center serving patients throughout Raleigh, Cary, Wake County, and the surrounding region. The center provides coordinated hematology and oncology care, outpatient infusion services, advanced cancer treatments, clinical trial access, pharmacy services, and multidisciplinary support in one convenient location.

The primary patient population will include adults with hematologic malignancies who require longitudinal subspecialty care, including patients with lymphoma, multiple myeloma, leukemia, and other blood cancers. The physician will evaluate and manage patients who may benefit from CAR-T therapy, bispecific antibodies, cellular immunotherapy, or other advanced treatment approaches. Responsibilities may include treatment consultation, patient selection, pre-treatment evaluation, longitudinal disease management, management of therapy-related complications, and post-cellular therapy follow-up.

This role will help expand access to advanced hematologic malignancy care for patients in Wake County while maintaining close integration with the Duke Blood Cancer Center and cellular therapy program at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. Patients requiring specialized cellular therapy procedures, complex inpatient care, transplantation, or other tertiary-level services will have seamless access to Dukeโ€™s main academic campus.

The faculty member may participate in clinical care, research, teaching, multidisciplinary conferences, and other academic activities at Duke University Medical Center as programmatic and patient-care needs warrant.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with faculty and multidisciplinary teams across cellular therapy, transplantation, lymphoma, leukemia, myeloma, pharmacy, research, nursing, and advanced practice. The physician will also help strengthen referral relationships with community oncologists and regional healthcare partners while supporting the continued growth of Dukeโ€™s hematologic malignancy and cellular therapy presence across Wake County. Our position is primarily clinical in nature, with 70% of this position dedicated to clinical effort, including an emphasis on our growth in Wake County.
