Job Description for Bus Driver
Position Summary:
The bus driver is responsible for operating a school bus safely and efficiently to transport students to and from school, ensuring adherence to established routes and schedules. This position requires a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements and a commitment to maintaining a safe and orderly environment on the bus.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma (required)
  • CDL license by the Alabama Department of Public Safety
  • Bus driver license by the Alabama State Department of Education
  • Ability to pass a drug and medical screening
  • Possess excellent driving skills and an acceptable driving record
  • Fingerprint clearance with the Alabama State Department of Education prior to the start date
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Drive the assigned school bus based on a predetermined schedule and route provided by the transportation department
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and district policies while operating the school bus
  • Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections of the bus to ensure safety and report maintenance issues to the transportation director
  • Maintain order and discipline among students while on the bus, ensuring compliance with safety rules and regulations
  • Ensure that students board and exit the bus safely at designated stops, using appropriate procedures and safety equipment
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school staff regarding bus routes, schedules, and behavior expectations
  • Respond calmly and effectively to emergencies, accidents, or incidents involving students or the school bus
  • Follow procedures for evacuating students in emergencies and provide assistance to students with special needs or disabilities as necessary
  • Report incidents, accidents, or safety concerns to the transportation director and follow district protocols for documentation and reporting
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks on the school bus, such as checking fluid levels, tire pressure, and cleanliness
  • Conduct regular inspections of the bus interior and exterior to ensure it meets safety standards and cleanliness requirements.
  • Complete required paperwork, logs, and reports accurately and in a timely manner
  • Complete annual training requirements for bus drivers
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal and other district administrators
Required Skills and Competencies:

Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand for extended periods of time. The employee must also talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee may be required to use their hands to finger, handle, feel, and/or reach. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must freuqently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
