Job Description

The Wildlife Biologist will lead and perform wildlife surveys, habitat assessments, and environmental permitting tasks while contributing to high-quality technical reports and analyses. This role combines extensive fieldwork with office-based data analysis and report preparation, and requires strong technical, organizational, and communication skills. The position offers significant travel opportunities, exposure to diverse project types, and the chance to grow professionally in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct wildlife surveys and habitat assessments for a wide variety of project types and clients.
  • Perform endangered resource record reviews to support environmental compliance and permitting.
  • Prepare and support environmental permit applications and environmental review documents.
  • Collect and map GPS data in the field and integrate it into project mapping and analysis.
  • Perform wetland and stream delineations and assessments in accordance with applicable guidance.
  • Prepare and assist with written technical reports, tables, spreadsheets, databases, applications, and maps for review by clients and regulatory agencies.
  • Work under the supervision of a project manager while taking initiative to complete assigned tasks independently.
  • Organize and direct field teams, ensuring that fieldwork is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements.
  • Develop work plans, schedules, and budgets for proposals and ongoing projects.
  • Collect, manage, and analyze environmental and biological data to support project conclusions and recommendations.
  • Draft high-quality technical documents, including professional plans, technical reports, correspondence, and permit applications.
  • Use ArcGIS Online for mapping, spatial analysis, and presentation of environmental data.
  • Provide quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) for project deliverables to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Communicate project status, findings, and issues effectively to the project manager and other team members.
  • Travel to project sites, sometimes for extended periods with overnight stays, and conduct fieldwork in a variety of outdoor conditions, including inclement weather.

Essential Skills

  • 5–10 years of experience leading and performing wildlife surveys and field sampling techniques.
  • Field experience in wildlife biology or closely related field, including experience in wildlife surveys and habitat assessments.
  • Experience with bats or birds in a field survey or research context.
  • Proficiency in field data collection using scientific equipment such as hand-held GPS units, data entry devices (tablets, iPads, etc.), soil augers, binoculars, and other sampling equipment.
  • Advanced technical writing skills sufficient to draft professional plans, technical reports, correspondence, and permit applications.
  • Strong data collection and analysis skills, including the ability to manage and interpret environmental and biological datasets.
  • Ability to use ArcGIS Online for mapping and spatial analysis tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and direct field teams and coordinate field logistics.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to clearly convey project status and technical information to project managers and team members.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently and conduct fieldwork for extended periods, including overnight travel and work in challenging outdoor conditions.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and meet project deadlines.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in botany, biology, ecology, wildlife biology, or a closely related environmental science discipline.
  • Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Experience preparing environmental permit applications and environmental review documents.
  • Experience conducting wetland and stream delineations and assessments.
  • Experience developing work plans, schedules, and budgets for environmental or biological projects.
  • Experience preparing technical reports, tables, spreadsheets, databases, and maps for client and regulatory agency review.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and quality in all project deliverables.

Work Environment

This position combines substantial fieldwork with office and remote work. Approximately 60% of the time will be spent traveling to project sites, which may require extended trips and overnight stays. Fieldwork involves working outdoors in a variety of habitats and weather conditions, including inclement weather and exposure to the elements, while using equipment such as hand-held GPS units, tablets or iPads for data entry, soil augers, binoculars, and other sampling tools. When not traveling, work can be performed in an office or remote setting, focusing on data analysis, technical writing, mapping in ArcGIS Online, and coordination with project teams.
