Job description

A qualifying disability is required for this position. A qualifying disability may be a result of injury, disease or congenital defect which limits the person's functional capabilities.


DETAILS OF POSITION 

Location: Port Hueneme, CA /  Full-time: Monday - Friday  /   Hours: 7:00 am – 3:30 pm  /  Starting Rate: $24.12 per hour 


PURPOSE OF POSITION 

VTC Enterprises has been supporting people with developmental disabilities since 1962. Part of fulfilling our mission includes providing individuals with community experiences to develop and promote their independence. 

In this position, the Naval Base Ventra County (NBVC) Pest Applicator is responsible for a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled grounds maintenance work at areas throughout the assigned military base.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Complete grounds maintenance requirements as specified in the government base contract.
  • Perform routine cleaning, preventative maintenance and minor repair tasks on tools and equipment as required.
  • Operate hand tools and power tools commonly utilized in ground maintenance operations safely.
  • Perform plant bed maintenance which includes fertilizing, weeding, mulching and policing.                                 
  • Prune trees up to 6 feet in height from ground level, including cleanup and debris removal.
  • Prune shrubs, hedges and vines, including cleanup and debris removal.
  • Trim and edge around walks, flower beds and walls, including cleanup and debris removal.
  • Turf rejuvenation, including dethatching, aerating, seeding and fertilizing. Safely operate riding lawn mowers to maintain grounds in a manner that meets or exceeds government quality specifications.


Qualifications included in the following: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required for this position.   


  • Education and/or Experience: No minimum education requirements.  Previous experience in applying herbicide is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Grounds Maintenance Tools: Must demonstrate the proficient use the following tools: backpack blower, hedge trimmer, and line trimmer. 
  • Communication Skills: Ability to remember and follow verbal directions. Able to understand written or oral equipment operation procedures in English. Must be proficient in speaking and understanding the English language in order to communication with the control tower at the airfield.  
  • Interpersonal Skills: Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers and management. Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Self-Management Skills: Perform effectively in environments with frequent workload changes and competing demands. Ability to perform repetitive work according to set procedures.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out basic written or oral instructions. Ability to think through the consequences of a decision prior to making it. Ability to recognize an emergency and take appropriate action.

  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must have a valid driver's license with an insurable record. Must have current Qualified Applicators License (QAL) Category B - Landscape Maintenance, C - Right of Way & F – Aquatic


Requirements

  • Must possess a Qualified Applicator's License Category B from the Department of Pesticide Regulations or be able to obtain the license shortly after the date of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license with an insurable record.
  • An insured vehicle available for use during employment.
  • Must be willing and able to work up to 8 hours per shift.  
  • Must be able to work in varying weather conditions, shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required
