Position Overview

The Assistant Boys Basketball Coach supports the Head Coach in developing, organizing, and leading the boys basketball program at the high school level. This role emphasizes teaching fundamental basketball skills, fostering teamwork, promoting academic achievement, and modeling positive character for student-athletes. The assistant coach works closely with the head coach, athletic director, and school administration to ensure the program aligns with the mission and values of the school.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Coach in planning, organizing, and conducting practices, games, and team activities.
  • Teach fundamental and advanced basketball skills, strategies, and conditioning appropriate for high school athletes.
  • Support player development on and off the court, focusing on sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, and leadership.
  • Help manage game-day operations, including scouting opponents, developing strategies, and ensuring athletes are prepared.
  • Monitor and support student-athletes' academic performance, encouraging balance between athletics and academics.
  • Assist with equipment management, inventory, and uniform distribution/collection.
  • Uphold and enforce all school, conference, and IHSA (or state association) policies and regulations.
  • Promote a safe and respectful environment for athletes, maintaining high standards of conduct and discipline.
  • Collaborate with the Head Coach and Athletic Director on scheduling, transportation, and program communication with players and families.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for student-athletes.

Requirements

  Qualifications

  • Previous basketball playing and/or coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, or club level preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of basketball rules, techniques, and strategies.
  • Ability to motivate and instruct student-athletes in both individual and team settings.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with athletes, parents, staff, and administration.
  • Commitment to academic success, character development, and the overall well-being of student-athletes.
  • CPR/First Aid certification and completion of required IHSA or state coaching certifications (or willingness to obtain).

Time Commitment

  • Seasonal position, typically November-March (practice and game schedule varies, includes evenings and weekends).
  • Additional off-season duties may include camps, open gyms, and player development sessions as approved by the Athletic Director.
