GIRLS YOUTH TRAVEL BASKETBALL COACH


School/Program Features:

● Approximately 1860 students in grades 9-12

● School is located in southwest Marion County

● Member of Mid-State Conference with Franklin, Greenwood, Martinsville, Mooresville, Perry Meridian, Plainfield, and Whiteland

● Member of (4A) Sectional - Center Grove, Decatur Central, Franklin Central, Greenwood, Perry Meridian, Southport

● Two certified athletic trainers on staff

● Great facilities; including state of the art weight room, Armstrong (Indoor) Pavilion, athletic annex building, main competition gym, auxiliary gym, locker rooms, team meeting room/classroom/offices, and a Field-Turf multi-purpose field.


Qualifications:

● Previous basketball coaching experience preferred

● Currently possess or has ability to obtain IHSAA coaching certification

● Excellent communication and leadership skills

● Knowledge of fundamental basketball skills

● Ability to form positive relationships with student-athletes, school staff, and community members

● Ability to organize, supervise, and administer all phases of an education-based basketball program

Position Overview


The Youth Travel Girls Basketball Coach is responsible for developing young players through the game of basketball while building a strong foundation rooted in Decatur Central Girls Basketball culture and program standards. This position focuses on teaching the fundamentals, building confidence, and creating a positive, competitive environment where players learn how to work, communicate, and grow. Coaches will also engage in ongoing professional development to stay aligned with the vision and standards of Decatur Central Girls Basketball.


Primary Responsibilities


Player Development & Practice

● Plan and lead at least two practices per week during the season

● Teach fundamental skills (dribbling, passing, shooting, spacing, defense) in a clear and age-appropriate way

● Create simple, organized practice plans that emphasize repetition, effort, and improvement

● Use drills that build confidence, competitiveness, and love for the game

● Provide encouragement and constructive feedback to players


Game Coaching

● Coach games with a focus on teaching over winning

● Help players understand basic game concepts (spacing, teamwork, decision-making)

● Maintain composure and model positive sideline behavior

● Ensure all players are developing and gaining meaningful experience


Program Culture & Standards

● Teach and reinforce daily discipline, effort, and accountability at a foundational level

● Build relationships with players based on trust, encouragement, and consistency

● Create a positive team environment where players feel confident to learn and grow

● Model what it means to be a coach—energy, communication, and presence matter


Coach Development

● Participate in program-led professional development sessions

● Learn and apply teaching methods aligned with Decatur Central Basketball

● Be open to feedback and growth within the coaching staff

● Stay aligned with terminology, concepts, and culture of the program


Communication & Organization

● Communicate clearly with players and parents regarding schedules and expectations

● Be organized and on time for all practices and games

● Represent the program with professionalism and integrity
