Job description

N.K. Hurst Co. — Zionsville, IN (on site) | Full-time | $21–$24/hour

N.K. Hurst Co. has been a family-owned Indianapolis-area food company for over 90 years — you may know us as the makers of Hurst's HamBeens 15 Bean Soup. We're a small team where your work is visible, your questions reach the people who can answer them, and your responsibilities grow as you show what you can do.

We're hiring an Accounting & Office Administrator to take on a varied, hands-on role at the center of our office.

What you'll do:

• Own day-to-day accounts payable: code invoices, match to receipts and purchase orders, enter into our ERP, prepare payment runs for approval, and keep vendor records clean.

• Prepare and send customer invoices — our shipping is scan-captured, so most invoicing is careful review and commit, plus handling the invoices that go out by email or customer portal.

• Be the front line for consumer questions and requests by phone, email, and web — resolve the routine ones yourself, route the rest to the right person.

• Fulfill and ship orders from our online store.

• Track inbound and outbound freight through carrier websites and flag late or problem loads.

• Check outbound orders against paperwork before shipment and chase down discrepancies.

• Keep the office running: mail, filing, supplies and equipment, phones and front desk, and the recurring annual odds and ends.

No two days are the same queue. If you'd rather do one thing all day, this isn't your job. If you like variety and being the person who catches the error, it is.

What we're looking for:

• Accurate and organized with detail work — you notice when something doesn't match.

• Comfortable with computers and Excel; ERP experience (SAP a plus) is welcome but not required. We'll teach you our systems.

• Equally at ease answering a customer call and working through a stack of invoices.

• Curious — you ask why, not just what.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree; or Associate degree plus 3 years of office/accounting experience; or 5 years of relevant experience.

What we offer:

• $21–$24/hour, based on experience.

• Health insurance eligibility at 90 days — very reasonable employee-only rates, competitive family coverage.

• 401(k): Eligible on the first day of the month following 3 months of employment. N.K. Hurst contributes 4% of pay to employee retirement accounts.

• PTO accrues from your first day (two weeks per year), available for use after 90 days.

• Steady hours: 8 AM–5 PM, Monday–Friday. No nights, no weekends, no shift work.

• Room to grow — this role can take on more accounting and administrative responsibility over time, and we have a track record of promoting from within.

  • How to apply: Send a resume and a few sentences about a process you improved or an error you caught — we read those first.
