An opportunity is available for an Emissions Lab Hardware Engineer to support and troubleshoot emissions testing. This role involves using analytical benches, secondary sampling equipment, and chassis dynamometers. The engineer will manage troubleshooting efforts, perform quality control and calibration, analyze test results for compliance, and provide technical guidance to union technicians during equipment repairs. This position requires hands-on hardware expertise and analytical skills within a laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities

  • Lead troubleshooting for emissions analytical benches, secondary sampling systems, and chassis dynamometers to resolve hardware, software, and system-level issues.
  • Diagnose root causes of test anomalies before, during, and after emissions testing.
  • Support the setup, execution, and monitoring of emissions tests to ensure compliance with procedures.
  • Perform quality control checks, calibrations, and verifications of emissions measurement and sampling equipment.
  • Analyze emissions and test data to validate results and ensure compliance with regulatory and internal quality standards.
  • Ensure proper operation of sample handling systems, including heated lines, filters, pumps, and valves.
  • Provide technical guidance to union technicians for equipment repairs and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with technicians to identify repair strategies and verify corrective actions.
  • Document quality checks, calibrations, root cause analyses, and test results in accordance with ISO 17025 standards.
  • Support continuous improvement of test methods, equipment reliability, and laboratory processes.
Required Qualifications Education: A Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Automotive, or a related field) or equivalent experience is required. Technical degrees are acceptable, and a high school diploma is mandatory. Experience: Hands-on experience troubleshooting electrical and mechanical systems and instrumentation devices using service manuals and engineering drawings. Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues with minimal supervision. Experience analyzing test data for compliance and root cause investigations. Technical Skills: Familiarity with data acquisition systems and test software. A strong understanding of electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation diagrams is necessary. The ability to work effectively in a unionized laboratory or test environment is also required. Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with regulated emissions testing (FTP, WLTP, US06, RDE, etc.).
  • Experience working with chassis dynamometers.
  • Understanding of emissions testing principles, sampling methodologies, and quality control.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting emissions analytical benches and secondary sampling equipment.
  • Knowledge of emissions regulations (EPA, CARB, EU) and internal audit practices.
  • Experience with secondary dilution tunnels, bag sampling, PM/PN sampling, and related hardware.
  • Prior experience in automotive or powertrain testing environments.
  • Experience with Horiba CVS, Horiba MEXA-ONE, PEMS, Burke Porter chassis dynamometers, Modal Sampling systems, AVL, and National Instrument Devices (PLC).
Work Environment
  • This role is based in an emissions laboratory and test cell environment.
  • The position involves hands-on hardware troubleshooting and quality activities alongside technicians.
  • Flexible hours, including potential weekend overtime, may be required to support testing schedules.
  • The position is 100% on-site with no travel.
