A Weekend Auto Body technician repairs and restores the exterior of vehicles that have been damaged in accidents or by other means, typically working weekends to accommodate customer schedules. Their duties include assessing damage, removing dents, replacing parts, sanding, painting, and ensuring vehicles look as close to their original state as possible. Weekend shifts may involve working independently or as part of a smaller team, and technicians often need to be skilled in using a variety of tools and materials. They must also follow safety protocols and maintain high-quality standards in their work.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges for someone working a weekend shift in auto body repair?

Working weekend shifts in auto body repair often involves handling urgent repairs, managing a steady workflow with fewer staff, and ensuring vehicles are ready for customers who rely on weekend pickup. You may also address walk-in clients and collaborate closely with a small team or independently. Common challenges include balancing multiple tasks under time constraints and ensuring quality work despite a potentially higher customer volume on weekends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend auto body technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Auto Body Technician, you need expertise in vehicle body repair, painting, and refinishing, typically supported by vocational training or an automotive service certification. Familiarity with tools like spray guns, frame straighteners, and computerized estimating systems is often required. Job description

ABRA Collision Repair | Spokane, WA Compensation: $80,000-$85,000 base + performance bonus at target (total target comp $100,000-$106,000)
About the Shop
We're a growing ABRA-affiliated collision repair center in Spokane, working closely with a full-service dealership network and a strong DRP (direct repair program) base. This is a tight, high-performing crew - an experienced estimator, a dedicated CSR, a highly skilled A-level technician, a painter, and a detailer - and we're looking for a hands-on leader ready to run production, protect our insurer relationships, and grow the team.
The Role
This isn't a desk job. You'll be running the floor as much as you're running the numbers - scheduling production, keeping cycle time tight, coaching the team, and staying directly involved in the shop's day-to-day work. You'll report on shop performance, manage DRP/insurer relationships, and have real input on hiring as we build out the crew (we're actively looking to add a disassembly/reassembly technician to free up our A-tech for higher-value repair work - you'll help shape that hire).
What you'll own:
  • Daily production scheduling and workflow across the shop
  • Insurer/DRP relationship management and scorecard performance
  • Cycle time, gross profit %, and CSI targets
  • Coaching and developing a lean, high-performing crew
  • Hands-on involvement in estimating and production when the shop needs it

What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of collision repair industry experience, including some time in a leadership or senior estimator role
  • Comfort managing DRP/insurer relationships and understanding scorecard metrics
  • Willingness to stay hands-on - this is a small-crew shop, and the right person leads from the floor, not just the office
  • I-CAR or ASE certification preferred
  • Strong communicator who can develop technicians and build a team, not just direct one

What We Offer
  • A strong base salary ($80,000-$85,000) plus a performance bonus targeted at 25% of base, tied to gross profit, cycle time, and customer satisfaction - not a flat commission plan
  • Real autonomy: you'll run this shop, not just administer someone else's playbook
  • A voice in building out the crew as we grow, starting with our next hire
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off (PTO)
