What is a weekend associate attorney?

A Weekend Associate Attorney is a licensed lawyer who works primarily on weekends, often to support law firms or legal departments that require additional assistance outside traditional weekday hours. These attorneys may handle tasks such as legal research, drafting documents, case preparation, or client consultations. Weekend Associate Attorneys are commonly employed by firms that deal with urgent cases, high workloads, or clients who are only available during weekends. This position offers flexibility for both the attorney and the employer, and can be beneficial for those balancing other commitments during the week.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend associate attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Associate Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, a valid state bar license, and strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, as well as document management systems, is typically required. Excellent time management, communication, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure that critical legal tasks are handled efficiently and accurately, even outside standard business hours, supporting client needs and firm objectives.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend associate attorneys, and how can I prepare for them?

Weekend Associate Attorneys often manage tight deadlines and a higher volume of urgent client matters since they support cases that require immediate attention outside standard business hours. Balancing workload and maintaining communication with colleagues who work weekdays can also be challenging. To succeed, it's helpful to develop strong organizational skills, be proactive in updating case files, and ensure clear, timely communication with the broader legal team. Familiarity with remote work tools and time management strategies will also help you excel in this unique schedule.

Job description

Introduction

Woods & Woods is seeking an Associate Attorney to join our ever-growing VA Disability Department. Associate Attorneys who excel will have the chance for promotion to Senior Attorney roles with fee sharing.

About Woods & Woods

Woods & Woods is a family-owned, nationwide VA disability law firm based in downtown Evansville, Indiana. We are one of America’s largest VA disability law firms in terms of clients, revenue, and staff members. We currently employ roughly 155 staff members to support our VA Disability practice.

Benefits at Woods & Woods
  • Free health insurance for employees
  • Family health insurance plans available
  • Low-cost dental and vision insurance
  • 401(k) matching up to 4%
  • Free life insurance
  • Three months paid parental leave
  • Free mental health counseling
Work Hours and Vacation Time
  • 36.5 hour work weeks
  • Flexible schedules, including “Flex Fridays”
  • Hybrid work schedules
  • Paid vacation, personal time, and holidays every year
Culture at Woods & Woods

Your life is too short to hate your job! That’s why cultivating a healthy, balanced, and fun culture has been crucial at our law firm. You won’t find another firm quite like ours, and it’s the reason our attorneys stay with us. Woods & Woods is committed to redefining the expectations of being a lawyer at a large law firm.

So what does that look like in practice? For starters, our Senior Attorneys work fewer hours for higher pay than those at comparable firms. We understand you went to law school to earn a nice living, not to spend your life working around the clock.

Work life balance is not just a corporate buzzword at Woods & Woods – it’s a way of life. We offer flexible, hybrid schedules and a 36.5 hour work week, no evenings or weekends required. We also offer generous paid time off to allow you to enjoy life outside of work.

Our culture makes other firms look antiquated. We don’t wear suits and ties to the office, or even have a dress code. Walking around our building, you’ll see staff members smiling and laughing with each other. We even have a Fun Committee. The Woods & Woods Fun Committee is responsible for planning activities like our office Field Day, Christmas and birthday parties, trips to wineries, pumpkin patches, baseball games, and more. These events help you get to know your coworkers and their families, and blow off steam. Your job shouldn’t be all business, it should also be fun.

Another unique thing about our firm is more than 90% of our staff is made up of women. While we don’t discriminate in hiring, we have more success attracting and retaining women than most law firms. We spend a great deal of time and energy on retaining staff by creating opportunities for growth, listening to concerns through routine surveys, prioritizing comprehensive benefits, and, as previously mentioned, leaving time for fun. Thanks to this, we have a very low turnover rate. Meeting our staff, you’ll find many of them have worked for Woods & Woods for five, ten, even twenty years. We are looking for dedicated, organized, and thoughtful Associate Attorneys to join those ranks.

Compensation at Woods & Woods

Associate Attorney pay starts at $70,000 a year and increases quarterly to a cap of $90,000. Associate Attorneys have the opportunity for promotion to a Senior Attorney position based on performance.
