Job description

Department: Surgery - Acute Care Surgery & Critical Care (ACS&CC)

Schedule: Coverage on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays (12-hour shifts - hours are negotiable)
FTE: 1.0 Full-Time Equivalent

Position Overview:
We are seeking a Physician Assistant to provide dedicated weekend support for our Acute Care Surgery (ACS&CC) team. This role will primarily involve managing all aspects of care for inpatients within the surgical service or ICU. The PA will collaborate closely with the residency team to ensure comprehensive patient coverage over the weekend.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Conduct inpatient rounds and engage in clinical decision-making.
  • Facilitate admissions and transfers to guarantee smooth transitions of care.
  • Accurately document all patient interactions in the electronic medical record (EMR) in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the operating room as either the first or second assistant.
  • Coordinate patient discharges and arrange follow-up care.
  • Respond to consults from the Emergency Department for ACS&CC and provide prompt evaluations.
  • Work collaboratively with attending surgeons, residents, nursing staff, and other departments.
  • Support trauma and acute care protocols during critical situations.
  • Participate in weekend hand-offs and care coordination meetings as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and team members.
  • Collaborate with other members of the ACS & CC team (surgeons, APPs, residents, medical students).
  • Contribute to the mission of education, research, and quality improvement.
Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current licensure in New York State and national certification (NCCPA).
  • Required certifications in BLS and ACLS.
  • Willingness to obtain audit or ATLS certification.
  • 1-2 years of experience preferred; background in emergency, trauma, or acute surgical care is advantageous.
  • Ability to operate independently in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
  • Strong communication and decision-making abilities.
