Cable Process Engineering Technician (Shift: M-F, 8am-5pm)
Samtec's cable engineering and manufacturing site in Wilsonville, Oregon has an opening for an experienced technician who has made similar products.
The Cable Process Engineering Technician is responsible for providing technical and administrative support to develop, qualify, and optimize cable products and manufacturing processes. The role assists engineering to execute and document engineering trials and testing, develop new products and processes, evaluate existing processes, and configure manufacturing systems to reduce cost, improve sustainability, maintain safety and develop best practices within the production process.
 Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
  • Run engineering trials to support process improvement, new product development and R&D projects. Execute engineering experiments, gather process data, complete process data analysis.
  • Execute process and equipment qualification plans.
  • Provide technical support and training on new products and processes to cable manufacturing personnel.
  • Ability to monitor and adjust machine parameters to control processes.
  • Read cable drawings and specifications to ensure product specifications and tolerances are met.
  • Read mechanical drawings, electronic schematics and equipment manuals to troubleshoot equipment, manage calibration and preventative maintenance processes; which include documentation, calibration, maintaining spare parts inventory.
  • Prepare samples and execute testing on mechanical, environmental, and electrical test equipment.
  • Equipment setup and configuration for manufacturing to ensure product specifications are met.
  • Operation of all cable processes including extrusion, shielding, cabling, ribbonizing.
  • Provide input and requirements for design of tooling and fixtures for manufacturing by collaborating with mechanical and process engineering and production operator teams.
  • Assists in creating, modifying and revising cable manufacturing work instructions and process flow documentation.
  • Apply quality standards training and assist with applying the standards in both documentation and processes.
  • Observes safety and security procedures; report potentially unsafe conditions.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

Required Experience:
  • 3 to 5 years of experience providing technical support in a manufacturing environment. Preferred experience in wire and cable manufacturing and polymer processing.
  • Must have a deep understanding of setup, operation, and troubleshooting of cable equipment and manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent observational skills. Able to recognize small discrepancies in the function of equipment. Able to use deductive reasoning to figure out the cause of a discrepancy.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organization and prioritization and follow-up skills. Able to maintain accurate engineering notebooks, process and equipment logs and other engineering records as required.
  • General mechanical assembly and fabrication experience.
  • Ability to learn electronic test equipment (TDR, VNA, various meters).
  • Proficient using a computer, including MS Office applications.
  • Strong multi-tasking skills. Completes several concurrent tasks in an efficient and accurate manner.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to read and write in English.
  • Experience working in fast pace, dynamic environment, with limited supervision.
  • Ability to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals in a variety of tasks.
  • Ability to be part of team and communicate effectively with all levels within the organization.
  • Lifting Requirements: Light Work - must be able to lift up to 20 pounds regularly from floor to waist.
  • Hazards: Must be willing to work with and around chemicals, machines and high-temperature process tooling and equipment. Must also be willing to follow all safety regulations and wear required protective gear (PPE).
Preferred Education:
  • High school diploma OR GED required.
  • AAS degree in technical discipline (Industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical, etc.) OR equivalent on-the-job training and experience.
  • Problem Solving background and experience executing controlled experiments is highly desirable.
Training Required:
  • On the job training as appropriate.
