Job description

Position Summary:

The Expansion/Extrusion Operator is responsible for operating, and maintaining all functions within the department, including the extrusion, expansion, and rewinding. This position will work as part of a team that will flex to other jobs according to production demands.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and supervise machine production in the expansion/extrusion area.
  • Changeover and start-up the machinery; initiate and complete shift-to-shift handoff with other operators.
  • Responsible for spooling rewind function.
  • Complete all paperwork to accurately record material and labor usage as required.
  • Support and assist with maintenance and servicing machines.
  • Monitor dimensions and quality as part of the worker self-inspection.
  • Notifies supervisor of equipment malfunction and works with maintenance if necessary to identify appropriate repairs.
  • Routinely checking and complying with work instructions and process parameters.
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Participate in projects to improve machines and processes as part of the company's internal continuous improvement management system.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) -relevant measures (health, safety and environment) to promote an Incident and Injury Free (IIF) workspace.
  • Ensure full adherence to the “Leader Standard Work” profile.
  • Operate all equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Provide training to new and/or junior employees with a focus on training to the SOP, performing work in a safe &efficient manner, and product quality within control limits and/or specifications as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

 

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Ability to read gages, perform measurements, calculate differences to specification, and percentages.
  • Computer and data entry skills of production metrics into production tracking systems.
  • Manual dexterity, high willingness to learn and self-motivation.
  • Ability to learn new processes and programs as required for the job.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team with enthusiasm and reliability.
  • Ability to learn Lean principles.
  • Ability to learn how to interpret and respond to SPC charts.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of materials, production processes and quality control.
  • Active listening and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment with frequently changing dynamics.
  • Visual ability to examine or inspect material.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, order jackets, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing for sustained periods of time.
  • Making substantial movements/motions of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Frequently lifting and/or moving spools weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasionally required to sit; climb and stoop, kneel or crouch.

 

Education & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • Post secondary education preferred (i.e., college or trade school).
  • Previous Manufacturing experience required.
  • Experience handling mechanical measuring equipment required.
  • Experience setting up and operating production equipment required.
  • Previous extrusion, blow molding, or injection molding experience preferred.
