What is a week nanny?

Week nannies are childcare professionals who provide care and supervision for children during the weekdays, typically from Monday to Friday. They may live with the family during the week or come to the home daily, depending on the arrangement. Week nannies handle daily routines such as preparing meals, taking children to and from school or activities, helping with homework, and engaging in educational play. Their primary role is to support working parents by ensuring the children's needs are met throughout the workweek.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a week nanny?

To thrive as a Week Nanny, you need experience in childcare, a recognized childcare qualification (such as CACHE or NVQ), and often first aid certification. Familiarity with child development milestones, safety protocols, and tools like baby monitors or scheduling apps is typically required. Strong communication, patience, and reliability are essential soft skills for building trust with both children and parents. These skills ensure a safe, nurturing environment and effective support for busy families throughout the week.

What are some common challenges a week nanny may face while managing multiple children in a household?

Week Nannies often encounter challenges such as balancing the needs of different-aged children, adapting to varied routines, and maintaining consistency with parental guidelines. Effective communication with parents and establishing clear expectations are crucial to navigate these situations smoothly. Additionally, Week Nannies must be adept at multitasking, resolving conflicts between children, and managing time efficiently to ensure a structured and nurturing environment throughout the week.

Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Position Overview

A North Reading family is seeking an experienced full-time nanny for their two children, a 6-month-old and a 3.5-year-old. This is a long-term, live-out position, Monday through Friday during business hours. The nanny will run the children's day independently — breakfast, walks, outdoor play, and engaging, hands-on activities at home and out in the community. The 3.5-year-old begins half-day preschool just after Labor Day, four days per week from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM at a school five minutes from the home, and the nanny will handle that transportation. The family is looking for someone active, dependable, and full of positive energy who enjoys creating age-appropriate activities: science museum visits (the family holds a membership), library trips, park outings with the many children in the neighborhood, reading, and educational play. A finished basement play space is available for rainy and winter days. Housekeeping is limited to the children's needs; a cleaning service comes every two weeks.

Benefits

  • 3 weeks paid vacation
  • 2 paid personal days
  • 2 paid sick days
  • All major federal holidays paid
  • Paid legally through a payroll service

Responsibilities

  • Full care of a 6-month-old and a 3.5-year-old, including bottle feeding (including expressed breast milk), naps, diapering, and daily routines
  • Transportation to and from half-day preschool four days per week (no school Wednesdays)
  • Daily walks and outdoor play, including park outings with neighborhood children
  • Planning and leading engaging, age-appropriate activities and outings — science museum, library, educational play
  • Light meal preparation for the children
  • Children's laundry and tidying of the children's spaces
  • Keeping the children the primary focus of the day

Requirements

  • Prior professional experience with infants and toddlers
  • Comfortable caring for two children of different ages at the same time
  • Valid driver's license
  • Physically active, engaging, and able to bring positive energy into the home
  • Able to swim and comfortable swimming with the children
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Up-to-date vaccinations
  • Committed to a long-term placement
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently
