What is a weekend nanny?

As a weekend nanny, your duties entail providing childcare and completing household tasks for parents. In part-time weekend nanny jobs, you work a Saturday-Sunday shift. You may commute each day to the house or stay there for the weekend. Your responsibilities vary depending on the unique needs of the children and parents for whom you work. You may care for one or more children only at the home, arrange and participate in activities, prepare meals, supervise homework, transport them to events, or run errands for the family. Other duties can include cleaning the home and helping bathe and groom children.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend nanny?

To thrive as a Weekend Nanny, you need experience in childcare, knowledge of child development, and often CPR/first aid certification. Familiarity with scheduling apps, communication tools, and sometimes light housekeeping equipment is beneficial. Patience, reliability, and strong communication skills help build trust with both children and parents. These skills ensure a safe, nurturing environment and smooth coordination with families during weekend care.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend nannies, and how can they be managed effectively?

Weekend nannies often face the challenge of quickly adapting to different family routines and expectations in a limited timeframe. Because weekends may include special activities, outings, or irregular schedules, flexibility and strong communication with parents are essential. Building rapport with children quickly, maintaining consistency with house rules, and managing transitions smoothly are key strategies for success. Staying organized and proactive in discussing plans with the family can help ensure a positive and productive weekend for everyone involved.

What is the difference between Weekend Nanny vs Babysitter?

Work EnvironmentLonger shifts, regular schedule, often in family’s homeShort-term, sporadic, usually in family’s home or elsewhere
Employer & Industry UsageFamilies seeking consistent weekend careParents needing occasional care, date nights, or short-term help

Weekend Nannies typically work regular weekend hours with more responsibilities and credentials, providing consistent care. Babysitters usually work on an as-needed basis with fewer requirements. Both roles are vital in childcare but differ mainly in schedule, credentials, and job scope.

Position Overview

An active, warm Downtown Boston family is seeking a passionate, enthusiastic, and self-motivated part-time nanny to join their household team. The nanny will care for their two energetic boys, ages 2 and 3, with care of their infant daughter during the evening portion of the shift. The family currently employs a daytime nanny, and this role picks up in the afternoon after school and daycare. The ideal candidate brings genuine energy, creativity, and initiative to the children's afternoons and evenings, and takes ownership of the role without needing to be micromanaged. This is an excellent fit for someone with a sports, coaching, or athletics background who truly enjoys getting outside and being active with young children. The family maintains a clean, organized home and is looking for someone who is naturally proactive about their environment. There is also an optional opportunity to earn additional hours at the family's second home in Maine, roughly 2.5 hours from Boston.

Benefits
  • 1 week paid vacation
  • 2 paid sick days
  • 2 paid personal days
  • 3 paid holidays
  • Healthcare stipend offered
  • Optional additional paid hours at the family's Maine home, with mileage, gas, and travel expenses covered
  • Additional benefits and perks negotiable for the right candidate
Responsibilities
  • Taking over care after school and daycare
  • Outdoor play and physical activity, including use of the nearby sports field and playground
  • Teaching and practicing sports skills — soccer, basketball, baseball, and golf
  • Reading and age-appropriate enrichment activities
  • Creating engaging activities that incorporate the children's interests
  • Preparing and assisting with dinner
  • Evening care of the infant, including bath and bedtime routines
  • Supporting the children's bedtime routines
  • Keeping the children engaged, happy, and active throughout the afternoon and evening
  • Clean-as-you-go tidying: cleaning up after activities and meals, keeping children's spaces tidy, and maintaining common areas used during the day
  • Optional: joining the family for occasional weekends or overnights at their Maine home
Requirements
  • Demonstrated experience caring for young children, including infants
  • Experience with active, energetic children preferred
  • Sports, coaching, teaching, or athletic background is a strong plus
  • Reliable, accountable, and able to work independently without close supervision
  • Calm and responsible while still bringing energy and enthusiasm
  • Comfortable working alongside other household staff
  • A personal vehicle is not required for the Boston role; the family uses rideshare for transportation with the children
  • Having a vehicle is a plus for optional Maine travel
  • No formal childcare certification or degree required
  • Must be able to provide 3–5 professional references
