The Product Consultant is a discipline specific subject matter expert who partners with Solutions Specialists and Account Teams to accelerate new business acquisition and digital adoption. Operating as a national team, Product Consultants support strategic opportunities nationwide to deepen discovery, tailor solutions, and deliver compelling presentations that differentiate Cengage in competitive environments.

This team is directly aligned to specific discipline level sales targets, playing a critical role in improving win rates, driving digital growth, and securing competitive takeaways. Product Consultant's combine disciplinary expertise with strong digital and communication skills to help customers understand how Cengage Learning Platforms address instructional needs.

They also serve as vital connectors between customers and internal teams sharing insights that shape product strategy, influence roadmap decisions, and ensure Cengage maintains strong relevance within each academic discipline. This role elevates Cengage's presence and credibility through high profile presentations, faculty engagement, and thought leadership.

1. Strategic Opportunity Support & Revenue Impact

  • Support high value, complex, or competitive new business opportunities in partnership with Solutions Specialists.
  • Contribute directly to assigned discipline-level sales targets by influencing pipeline progression, improving deal strategy, and elevating win rates.
  • Lead advanced discovery, solution consulting, and tailored product demonstrations that clearly align Cengage platforms with instructional, departmental, and institutional goals.
  • Translate customer needs into compelling solution narratives that reinforce Cengage's instructional and digital value.
  • Provide discipline-specific insights to help prioritize opportunities with the highest strategic impact.
2. Subject Matter Expertise & Digital Excellence
  • Maintain expertise in the specified area of study, including pedagogical trends, curriculum frameworks, and teaching practices.
  • Demonstrate advanced digital proficiency with Cengage's educational platforms, including feature mastery, capabilities, integrations, and guideline use cases.
  • Stay current on emerging discipline trends, driven solutions, instructional technology advancements, and evolving faculty expectations.
  • Serve as an internal advisor to field teams on relevant discipline-specific opportunities, trends, and challenges.
3. Cross Functional Collaboration & Internal Influence
  • Share structured, actionable customer feedback with Product, Technology, and Marketing to shape product enhancements and influence roadmap decisions.
  • Partner with Product and Customer Success teams to support pilots, beta programs, and solution refinement efforts.
  • Contribute to scalable assets such as demo scripts, competitive positioning frameworks, and discipline specific field enablement.
4. Market Presence, Advocacy & Thought Leadership
  • Represent Cengage as a lead presenter at conferences, events, regional meetings, webinars, and large academic gatherings.
  • Build and nurture relationships with faculty advocates, influencers, and champions within the discipline.
  • Support brand awareness and credibility by delivering high-quality, high impact presentations that elevate Cengage's solution leadership.
5. Internal Enablement & Team Partnership
  • Mentor and coach Solutions Specialists and Account Directors on discipline-specific insights, demo best practices, and competitive differentiation.
  • Collaborate closely with Solutions Leaders to align on national discipline strategy, coverage models, and sales enablement needs.
  • Support the creation of frameworks, tools, and best-practice materials that enhance the effectiveness of the sales motion across the org.
Skills you will need here:
  • Deep expertise within the assigned academic discipline OR at least 5-7 years of experience in EdTech, higher education, curriculum, or related fields.
  • Successful customer-facing experience with a strong preference for candidates with a proven track record in sales, pre-sales, consultative selling, or solution development.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a results-focused environment and meaningfully support attainment of discipline-level sales targets.
  • Exceptional presentation skills, with the ability to persuade, educate, and inspire diverse academic audiences.
  • High degree of digital fluency; comfortable demonstrating platforms, walking through technical workflows, and simplifying complex concepts.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work fluidly across Sales, Customer Success, Product, Technology, and Marketing.
  • Ability to travel nationally (up to 50%) for high impact opportunities and events.
Preferred
  • Teaching, instructional design, or academic experience within the discipline.
  • Prior experience in EdTech sales engineering, academic technology, curriculum support, or similar consultative roles.
  • Experience influencing product development, contributing customer insights, or collaborating with product teams.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce and digital selling environments.

The full base pay range has been provided for this position. Individual base pay will vary based on work schedule, qualifications, experience, internal equity, and geographic location. Sales roles often incorporate a significant incentive compensation program beyond this base pay range.
