Job Description
About the Role
The Web Content Specialist reports to the Director, Brand Creative & Web Strategy and manages The Huntington's Communications Desk workflow for website requests, with primary responsibility for the intake, editorial review, prioritization, coordination, production, and publication of web calendar events, web pages, exhibition pages, seasonal and campaign landing pages, institutional initiative pages, and related digital content.
This role is both editorial and operational. The Web Content Specialist reviews, edits, structures, produces, and publishes web content for clarity, accuracy, completeness, accessibility, audience relevance, Huntington style, and alignment with institutional web standards. The role also coordinates with divisional partners to resolve questions and missing information, determine when content is ready for publication, and ensure public-facing web content is timely, accurate, useful, and aligned with institutional priorities.
The successful candidate will be a strong writer and editor, a highly organized web content producer, and a systems-minded colleague who can manage a high volume of deadline-driven requests. This role requires independent editorial judgment, sound prioritization, diplomacy, and the ability to coach divisional web editors on event promotion, CMS practices, accessibility, and web content best practices.
Essential Duties
Communications Desk and Web Publishing Workflow
  • Manage the day-to-day Communications Desk workflow for website content requests, including event listings, event updates, web pages, landing pages, and related digital content.
  • Independently triage, prioritize, track, and resolve incoming web requests from divisions across the institution, using sound judgment to balance deadlines, institutional priorities, public-facing accuracy, and available capacity.
  • Review and edit event submissions and web content for clarity, accuracy, completeness, Huntington style, accessibility, audience relevance, calls to action, ticketing information, and alignment with web best practices.
  • Determine when submitted content is ready for publication and when additional information, revision, or stakeholder clarification is needed.
  • Build, format, update, and publish approved web content in the CMS using established templates, metadata standards, image requirements, accessibility guidelines, and brand standards.
  • Coordinate with program, curatorial, education, advancement, membership, visitor services, and other internal partners to resolve content questions and ensure public-facing information is accurate and complete.
  • Maintain visibility into request status, publishing timelines, dependencies, and blockers; communicate clearly with stakeholders about deadlines, next steps, and publication timing.
  • Conduct quality assurance before and after publication to ensure pages display correctly, links function properly, and public-facing information is accurate.

Web Writing, Editing, and Content Production
  • Write, edit, adapt, structure, and produce web content for public audiences, including exhibition pages, seasonal and campaign landing pages, event descriptions, program pages, institutional initiative pages, teasers, captions, metadata, and calls to action.
  • Write, edit, build, and produce newsletters in MailChimp.
  • Translate complex curatorial, scholarly, programmatic, or institutional information into clear, accessible, engaging digital content that supports audience understanding and action.
  • Exercise editorial judgment to ensure web copy supports audience needs, institutional priorities, visitation goals, ticketing or registration pathways, campaign goals, and overall user experience.
  • Build and update web pages in the CMS using approved templates, content structures, image standards, metadata, accessibility guidelines, and brand standards.
  • Apply SEO, accessibility, mobile-first, and plain-language best practices as appropriate.
  • Ensure web content reflects The Huntington's voice, editorial standards, and brand guidelines.

Divisional Editor Coaching and Web Standards - 10-15%
  • Coach divisional web editors and content contributors on event promotion, web writing, CMS standards, accessibility, image use, metadata, and content best practices.
  • Maintain and improve documentation, checklists, templates, and workflow guidance for web publishing and event submission processes.
  • Identify recurring issues in web submissions and recommend improvements to forms, templates, standards, instructions, or processes.
  • Serve as a resource for internal partners on approved web content standards and publishing workflows.
  • Help divisional partners understand how web content can better support audience engagement, event attendance, ticketing, and institutional priorities.

Digital Systems, Workflow, and Continuous Improvement - 10-15%
  • Use a systems-oriented approach to improve the efficiency, consistency, and reliability of web publishing workflows.
  • Partner with the Director, Brand Creative & Web Strategy, Web Content Coordinator, Digital & Technology staff, and other colleagues to support CMS improvements, workflow updates, and publishing process refinements.
  • Support content audits, page updates, content sunsetting, and routine maintenance to ensure web content remains accurate and current.
  • Review basic web performance or engagement data, as available, to inform content improvements.
  • Support documentation and workflow updates related to digital publishing, CMS use, and campaign execution.

Candidate Experience & Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, digital media, marketing, humanities, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in web content production, editorial workflow, digital communications, CMS publishing, or a related role.
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and communication skills.
  • Experience building, editing, and publishing content in a CMS such as Drupal, WordPress, or a comparable platform.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage detailed work, competing deadlines, and cross-functional requests with sound judgment.
  • Strong editorial judgment and ability to adapt complex information for public audiences.
  • Working knowledge of web accessibility, SEO, metadata, mobile-first content, and user-centered web practices.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Systems-oriented mindset, including the ability to identify workflow issues, maintain documentation, and recommend practical improvements.
  • Ability to work diplomatically and collaboratively with colleagues across departments and levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion, sound judgment, and professionalism when handling sensitive or time-sensitive information.

Preferred
  • Experience in a museum, library, cultural institution, university, nonprofit, or mission-driven environment.
  • Experience with Drupal.
  • Experience supporting web content for events, exhibitions, public programs, ticketed experiences, or institutional campaigns.
  • Familiarity with GA4, Google Search Console, or comparable analytics tools.
  • Familiarity with DAM systems, metadata workflows, image rights, and crediting practices.
  • Experience creating documentation, training materials, or guidance for internal content contributors.
  • Familiarity with WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards.
  • Experience supporting the implementation or improvement of digital tools, workflows, or content governance processes.
