Job description

Overview

At Esri, we build the world's most powerful geographic information system, enabling customers to make better decisions through the science of location. Our technology supports critical workflows in areas such as community engagement, public health, sustainability, and resilience.

ArcGIS Hub is expanding how people discover, share, and collaborate around authoritative geospatial data. As a Senior Product Engineer - Web Services, you will own and guide the evolution of backend services that power inapp and programmatic customer workflows across the ArcGIS platform.

This is a senior, productfocused role that combines deep technical fluency with strong product judgment. You will act as a service owner and trusted decisionmaker, shaping priorities, balancing tradeoffs, and ensuring our web services remain reliable, scalable, and valuable to customers over time.

Responsibilities

  • Own the endtoend evolution, quality, and customer impact of one or more ArcGIS web services, including enhancements, defects, reliability improvements, and technical investments
  • Serve as the primary product decisionmaker for assigned services, balancing customer needs, platform health, and longterm sustainability
  • Define and act on service goals, success metrics, and quality standards, using telemetry and customer feedback to guide prioritization and investment
  • Maintain and prioritize a comprehensive product backlog, making informed tradeoffs across features, defects, technical debt, and operational work
  • Own service contracts, API behavior, versioning, and backward compatibility, evaluating downstream impact across the ArcGIS ecosystem
  • Champion operational excellence, advocating for reliability, performance, scalability, and observability best practices
  • Influence product direction and multiply impact through crossteam collaboration, mentorship, and shared standards
  • Validate and triage enhancement and defect requests in collaboration with Esri Support Services

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in a product-focused role such as Product Engineer, Technical Product Owner, Product Manager, or similar
  • Strong experience working in Agile software development environments
  • Deep familiarity with web services and APIs, including RESTful services, service contracts, versioning, and backward compatibility
  • Experience working with ArcGIS applications and technologies (such as ArcGIS Hub, ArcGIS Map Viewer, ArcGIS REST APIs, ArcGIS API for Python, ArcGIS Maps SDKs)
  • Working knowledge of cloud-native service fundamentals, including availability, performance, monitoring, and operational concerns
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts to both technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Proven ability to operate with high autonomy while collaborating effectively across teams
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, GIS, Information Science, or another related field

Recommended Qualifications

  • Experience supporting enterprise-scale or other developer-focused products
  • Comfortable reading and reasoning about code in languages such as Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, and SQL (hands-on implementation is not required)
  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices from a product and quality perspective
