The Opportunity:
The Press Operator B is responsible for all aspects of press performance, including leading and directing Assistant Press Operators and overseeing feeder and jogger functions. This role ensures the efficient setup and operation of sheet-fed offset printing presses to produce single and multicolor work from lithographic plates. A typical day includes preparing press jobs, verifying specifications, maintaining print quality, and making real-time adjustments to meet production standards while ensuring safety, quality, and compliance with organizational guidelines.
How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
  • Operate and maintain sheet-fed offset printing press equipment to meet production and quality standards.
  • Review job orders to confirm quantities, materials, colors, and special instructions before production.
  • Set up plates, ink systems, and press configurations to achieve proper registration and color density.
  • Monitor print quality using densitometers and spectrophotometers to ensure accurate color reproduction.
  • Adjust press settings throughout production runs to maintain consistent output quality.
  • Record sheet counts, perform line clearance, and ensure proper documentation is maintained.
  • Lead and support Assistant Press Operators while coordinating feeder and jogger tasks.
  • Perform basic maintenance, troubleshooting, and assist in preventative maintenance activities.
  • Ensure compliance with safety policies, PPE requirements, and all workplace procedures.
  • Maintain work area standards aligned with 5S and SQF requirements and report any food safety concerns.
  • Support training and development by mentoring Press Operator C employees.

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED required).
  • 1-2 years of experience operating a multi-color printing press in a manufacturing environment or equivalent training.
  • Strong mathematical skills with understanding of measurements.
  • Proficiency with basic computer systems.
  • Effective problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Capability to work both independently and within a team environment.

Physical Demands:
This role requires standing, walking, talking, hearing, and visually inspecting materials throughout a 12-hour shift. The position involves frequent bending, climbing, lifting (up to and exceeding 50 pounds), pushing, pulling, reaching, and using hands for handling tasks. Vision requirements include close, distance, and peripheral vision, along with the ability to adjust focus. The work environment typically involves moderate noise levels.
