Position Summary
The UI/UX Designer will play a key role in enhancing the user experience and interface of digital solutions provided by the municipality. This position will involve designing intuitive, user-friendly interfaces for municipal applications, websites, and digital platforms that serve both residents and internal stakeholders. The role requires a combination of design expertise, front-end development skills, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to create accessible, seamless digital experiences that enhance public engagement and streamline access to municipal services.Major Job Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities Include:

Strategy & Planning

  • Collaborate with the IT division, Communications & Customer Experience team and municipal stakeholders to define user experience goals and business requirements for digital services.

  • Develop user personas and user journey maps, reference available data and analytics, and conduct competitor analysis to inform UI/UX design decisions.

  • Lead the design of wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity visual mockups.

Acquisition & Deployment

  • Work closely with the development team to ensure UI/UX designs are properly implemented and consistent with the intended experience.

  • Ensure a seamless handoff of design specs to developers, and assist in front-end development when needed (e.g., HTML/CSS, JavaScript).

  • Support the integration of user feedback and design iterations during the deployment process.

Operational Management

  • In collaboration with client divisions and departments, conduct regular usability testing and user feedback collection to refine UI/UX for continuous improvement.

  • Maintain a consistent design language and style guide across all forms, web applications and municipal digital platforms.

  • Work with the IT division to ensure the performance and optimization of UI components for responsiveness and scalability across multiple devices and browsers.

  • Conduct regular design quality assurance (QA) reviews to ensure that the UI/UX implementation aligns with the approved designs and adheres to municipal branding guidelines.

  • Work with divisions and departments, the Communications & Customer Experience team to identify user experience pain points and suggest / implement actionable design improvements based on user feedback, analytics and service trends.

  • Assist in the post-launch analysis of newly deployed digital solutions by monitoring user feedback, analyzing metrics, and proposing updates or enhancements to improve user satisfaction and engagement.

  • Regularly conduct accessibility audits and provide recommendations to ensure the municipality's digital platforms meet current accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG 2.1) and are usable for all community members, including those with disabilities

Education & Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Post-secondary/College diploma in Computer Science, Web Development, Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field.

  • 3-5 years of professional experience in UI/UX design and/or development, with a strong portfolio of web and mobile applications.

  • Experience designing interfaces for public-sector, government, or municipal services is highly desirable.

  • Proficiency in modern front-end development frameworks, including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and React (or similar frameworks).

  • Strong background in wireframing, prototyping, and user testing.

  • Previous experience working within an Agile development environment, collaborating with designers, developers, and product managers.

  • Strong understanding of accessibility standards and WCAG guidelines to ensure inclusive design.

  • Proficiency in Adobe XD, Sketch, Figma, or other wireframing and prototyping tools.

  • Knowledge of responsive design techniques and mobile-first design principles.

  • Familiarity with user research, including surveys, interviews, and usability testing.

  • Problem-solving skills with a keen eye for detail.

  • Ability to translate business requirements into intuitive and engaging user interfaces.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Web Development, Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field.

  • Certified Usability Analyst (CUA) or Certified User Experience Professional (CUXP) certification is highly beneficial.

  • Front-End Development or Web Design certification is an advantage (e.g., from institutions like W3C or Adobe).
