Who gets paid more, a Web Designer or a developer?

Web developers generally earn higher salaries than web designers because they have more technical skills, such as coding and programming, which are in higher demand. Salaries can vary based on experience, location, and specialization, but developers typically have higher earning potential due to their ability to build and maintain complex websites and applications.

What are Web Developers and Designers?

Web Developers and Designers are professionals who create and maintain websites. Web Developers focus on the technical aspects, such as coding, functionality, and performance, using languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and more. Web Designers concentrate on the visual elements, including layout, color schemes, typography, and user experience. Often, these roles overlap, and some professionals handle both the design and development aspects to ensure a website is attractive, user-friendly, and fully functional. Their combined skills help businesses and individuals establish a strong online presence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web Developer and Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Developer and Designer, you need proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, responsive design principles, and a solid understanding of UX/UI concepts, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with content management systems (such as WordPress), version control (like Git), and design tools (such as Adobe Creative Suite or Figma) is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, strong problem-solving, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are vital for creating visually appealing, functional, and user-centered websites that meet client needs and perform well across platforms.

How do Web Developers and Designers typically collaborate with other team members during a project?

Web Developers and Designers often work closely with project managers, content creators, and UX/UI specialists to ensure that both the functionality and aesthetics of a website meet client expectations. Job description

Why You're Reading This

You're on a website right now, and you can't help but notice the padding is off.

Just a touch. Nobody else sees it. But you do.

You've redesigned restaurant menus in your head at dinner. You've squinted at logos on billboards. You've closed browser tabs out of genuine offense. Design isn't just what you do - it's how you see the world.

We need that person.

Rocket Media is hiring a multidisciplinary digital designer who can own the creative output of a 22-year-old digital marketing agency that works with the best home services companies in the country. You'll be building websites that convert, campaigns that stop scrolls, and collateral that makes clients look like the pros they are.

This isn't a "generate some templates and send them through a review queue" role. You'll work directly with strategists, developers, SEO, and paid media teams - and your design decisions will have a measurable impact on real businesses.

What You'll Do

Web Design (Primary - 60%)

  • Design new custom websites, landing pages, web banners, and HTML email campaigns aligned with marketing strategies - primarily for HVAC and home services
  • Create visual interfaces for new sites and enhancements to existing ones, focused on user experience and conversion rate
  • Design responsive, mobile-first experiences using modern tools like Figma
  • Recommend changes and redesigns for existing properties to improve look, usability, and performance
  • Convey branding cohesively across multiple web properties
  • Produce design specs and assets for developer handoff
  • Design Ignition landing pages optimized for paid campaign performance
  • Collaborate with content, SEO, PPC, and development teams across the full design-to-release cycle

Brand & Marketing Design(Secondary - 40%)

  • Create campaign creative for paid social, display, and OTT advertising
  • Design client newsletter templates and email marketing assets
  • Create remarketing banners and supporting digital materials
  • Design client-facing reports, presentations, and marketing collateral
  • Develop social media graphics and templates
  • Produce visual assets for client proposals and pitch materials
  • Maintain and evolve brand consistency across all client deliverables

Skills You Need

Must-Haves:

  • 3-5 years of experience in responsive website design
  • Advanced knowledge of Figma (Sketch acceptable)
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Designed full websites from conception to completion - not just components
  • Deep understanding of responsive web design strategies and current trends
  • You design for conversion. User behavior matters as much as aesthetics.
  • Strong attention to detail - like, the kind that spots padding inconsistencies at dinner
  • Ability to multitask across projects with fast turnaround
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Comfortable managing third-party design resources
  • Self-directed. Remote means remote - you don't need hand-holding to deliver.

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Agency experience
  • Home services, trades, or blue-collar B2C industry background
  • Experience with AI design tools (Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, etc.)
  • Understanding of CSS and HTML
  • Motion graphics or video editing capabilities
  • Familiarity with WordPress/CMS-based design workflows
  • ServiceTitan or similar home services platform exposure

How We'll Know You're Succeeding (First 90 Days)

  • Own the design queue with zero bottleneck backlog by Day 60
  • Deliver 2+ complete website designs through the full approval process
  • Build reusable design templates and assets that accelerate future work
  • Build strong working relationships across dev, SEO, content, and PPC teams
  • Translate client brand identity into effective, conversion-driven creative

The Benefits

Some of the benefits of becoming part of our family include:

  • 401(k) employer matching
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • In-office drinks & food (we have a cereal bar)
  • Flexible work schedule
  • Quarterly whole-office team-building events
  • Top-of-the-line technology to get work done
  • An amazing facility to work from

Rocket's Hiring Process

You don't marry someone you just met (unless you're a Disney princess). You go on some dates and get to know each other. You bring them home to meet the family.

That's how we view the hiring process.

When you join our team, you become part of our family. So when you apply, prepare for a courtship. The process can sometimes seem a little cumbersome and even lengthy because we care so much about ourselves and you as a potential fit.

But if you do get the job, we'll do our best to make sure it's one you'll never want to leave.

Before You Apply...

  • Your portfolio should include at least three examples of website designs
  • Portfolio examples from real, on-the-job work are preferred; school or exploratory work is acceptable if needed
  • Designs built from scratch (not using pre-made templates or services like WordPress/Squarespace) are highly preferred
  • Be prepared to talk about your work
