What is web accessibility?

Web accessibility refers to the practice of designing and developing websites and web applications so that they can be used by everyone, including people with disabilities. This involves making sure that content is perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust for users who may rely on assistive technologies like screen readers, keyboard navigation, or alternative input devices. Ensuring web accessibility not only helps users with disabilities but also improves the overall usability and reach of a website. It often involves following guidelines such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) established by the W3C.

What are web accessibility jobs?

Web accessibility jobs focus on analyzing, auditing, and improving the accessibility of websites and web applications. Your duties as a web accessibility professional may include app, website, and online content accessibility. Accessibility general refers to remove barriers for people with disabilities. You work to develop automated testing systems and ensure compliance with internet accessibility requirements. A web accessibility lead or manager oversees all aspects of accessibility operations. When a specialist or analyst locates barriers, the manager works with web accessibility engineers to correct the issues and ensure that websites meet digital accessibility standards and web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG).

What are some common challenges faced by web accessibility specialists when collaborating with designers and developers?

Web accessibility specialists often encounter challenges such as differing levels of accessibility knowledge among team members and balancing visual design preferences with accessibility requirements. Effective communication is key, as specialists must clearly articulate accessibility needs and help integrate solutions early in the design and development process. Collaborating on accessible components, running accessibility audits, and providing hands-on training are common strategies to overcome these challenges, ensuring that accessibility is a shared responsibility across the team.
